Staycation Suggestions for Kids

Article Directory :: Travel & Leisure Articles

Taking a vacation is no easy thing. It's costly, for starters, and it can also be a hassle, especially for families. There is so much planning to do, to say nothing of dealing with gas prices or air travel restrictions. It's no big surprise that, for more and more families, the traditional vacation is losing some of its appeal?but the "staycation" has never been more popular. The prospect of staying at home and enjoying recreation and relaxation?and, most importantly, quality family time?holds considerable appeal for many. For those who have never enjoyed a staycation, though, it might be unclear as to exactly how to best enjoy a staycation.

There is no right or wrong way to do it, of course, but there are some general principles and suggestions that might make your family staycation more enjoyable and more memorable, both for you and for your kids. One idea is to plan some day trips, to sites that are in town or in neighboring towns. Remember, by opting out of a more traditional vacation, you are probably saving a great deal of money. Use some of that money to plan memorable events that don't require a lot of travel. It could be a trip to a local zoo or aquarium; or, it could simply be to a nearby park or outdoor area.

Conversely, you could also enjoy a staycation by actually staying in. Spend time with your family?reading, watching movies, playing games, or whatever. Just remember that this is meant to be leisure time, so you don't need to be worried with things like household chores. And as for meals, it can be a lot of fun to simply eat out?unless, of course, you're the type who unwinds best by letting loose in the kitchen! The important thing to remember is that you are on holiday?and you aren't going to make magical memories with your kids by deciding it's a good time for Spring Cleaning!

Here's a slight twist on the staycation theme: Instead of staying at home, why not stay at local lodgings? For those who live in the city, in particular, this is a great way to experience life in your hometown as a tourist. Book a hotel that is family-friendly and that offers a nice swimming pool and other activities that your kids will enjoy. Eat out and enjoy seeing the local sights, all without ever having to worry about what's going on at home. Given that you will be saving drastically on gas or airfare, this is still a cost-effective vacation option.

What's important to remember, as a sort of bottom-line principle, is that there is no right or wrong way to vacation?or to staycation. What matters is that you relax, enjoy yourself, and spend quality time together, as a family. Make memories together and enjoy a vacation state of mind?even if you never even leave your own living room!
