Once you have determined that it?s legal to bring your pet to Hawaii, it?s time to take a look at the Department of Agriculture?s list of requirements for allowing your pet to enter the state of Hawaii without being quarantined.

For the rest of this series on ?Bringing Pets To Hawaii,? I am going to assume your pets are dogs or cats, as that is the case for most people moving to Hawaii with animals. If your pet is another kind of animal, please refer to these requirements on the Department of Agriculture?s website:

• Birds and poultry
• Turtles and tortoises

In the U.S., the ubiquitous For Dummies book series got its start with computer manuals and has since expanded to thousands of titles on everything from composing to composting. In England, a company called Rough Guides made its name selling travel books but has now branched out with about 70 reference books with titles such as The Rough Guide to the Beatles. Its latest entry is a 376-page, paperback-size book called The Rough Guide to Psychology, written by Christian Jarrett, a journalist who works for the British Psychological Society.

?We?re all psychologists at heart,? Jarrett writes, in the sense that we all want to understand human behavior. But real research psychologists, he says, are different from the rest of us ?because they know what they don?t know.? They are skeptics, relying heavily on the methods of the natural sciences to find truth. An educator might believe, for example, that the best way to deal with troublemakers is with punishment; a researcher would test that idea by comparing the effects of teachers who punish with those of teachers who do not.

With this idea as its foundation, Jarrett takes us on a research-driven ?journey through intriguing topics: how memory is organized, why people make bad decisions, how genes set limits on intelligence, what science says about love, where prejudice comes from, and much more. Throughout, he describes experiments or surveys that support every point.

The range of topics is similar to that of an introductory textbook in college, but this volume is about a tenth the size and the writing is consistently lively. In effect, Jarrett has given us a book of psychological nuggets, often delivered in shaded blue boxes that tell us things such as: yes, people overestimate both their driving skills and head size; no, women do not talk more than men, but they do use kisses to size up potential mates more than men do; yes, the brain lights up in distinctive ways when people are experiencing religious feelings, but a ?God spot? probably does not exist.

Having taught introductory psychology classes for many years, I was prepared to nitpick this admittedly rough look at the field, but the book holds up. It is accurate, up-to-date and easy to read. My only gripe is that it contains no references; if a passage on sleepwalking or autistic savants grabs your attention and you want to know more, you are on your own. That said, for a rough guide, this book is smooth.

Summer programs for kids and teens at UW-Milwaukee | Milwaukee ...

Many universities are quiet places in the summer, but not the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.

Hundreds of elementary, junior high and high school students come to campus during the summer months to take part in the university?s extensive array of pre-college programs and camps.

The goal of the programs is to provide students with academic support services and hands-on experiences that give them ?wonderful, unique experiences that enhance their vision of their future,? says April Holland, executive director of UWM?s TRIO and Pre-College programs. The office offers pre-college programs year-round, but summertime gives younger students a chance to spend several weeks at a time on campus.

The programs include a variety of summer camps and enrichment programs especially focused on students who might not have seen college as part of their future, says Holland.

It?s an opportunity to let youngsters, particularly in the African American, Hispanic, Hmong and American Indian communities, see what college is all about, explore majors and careers, and learn the skills they need to succeed, she adds.

The Upward Bound Math and Science program for students in grades 9-12, for example, helps students realize their potential to excel in mathematics and science. It also gives them opportunities to explore majors and future careers in the STEM fields ? Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Another program, Future Success, helps students prepare for high school success and college admission. The students do work in mathematics, science and English, and work to improve test-taking and mathematics skills. Students get a chance to work with faculty members in areas like physics, biology, engineering, nursing and other areas to learn more about careers in these areas.

The summer exploration camps offer junior high students a chance to do handson science experiments, investigate mathematics and work in teams to research, write and construct their own talk show.

In addition to the educational opportunities that are part of the TRIO and Pre- College program, individual schools and departments offer specific programs for future students. The School of Education, for example, offers a two-week Urban Teacher World program that gives ninth and tenth graders a chance to build their skills and learn more about careers in education. The School of Architecture and Urban Planning offers a weeklong architecture summer camp for high school students who think they may be interested in a career in architecture.

And, the TRIO and Pre-College program works closely with UWM?s College for Kids and College for Teens programs, says Holland. College for Kids, now in its 31st year, offers youngsters an opportunity to try everything from designing computer games to helping out at an archaeology field school.

Holland, who recently returned to UWM after 10 years, says she enjoys meeting up with graduates of the pre-college programs who are now in college themselves or in successful careers.

?I run into them in Starbucks or on campus all the time,? she says. Recently, for example, she had lunch with Audia Dobson Young, who was in a 1999 pre-college program, went to Marquette majoring in computer technology and now works at GE Medical.

All of the TRIO and Pre- College programs offer financial aid to students who need it, as do most of the other UWM programs and camps. Rangers to raise railings after fan death (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? The Texas Rangers plan to make all the protective railings at their stadium the same height, raising some as much as a foot to make their stadium safer following the death of a fan during a recent game.

Rangers executive vice president Rob Matwick said Tuesday that the team's intention is for all rails in the front of seating sections to be 42 inches throughout Rangers Ballpark.

Architectural and engineering studies are already under way at 17-year-old Rangers Ballpark to determine how to do the work.

Railings around the ballpark now are 30 or 34 inches in most areas, with 42-inch rails already at the base of aisles that lead to the front row. City building requirements are that guardrails must be at least 26-inches high.

"Part of the goal is to not only raise it, but to raise it to the highest standard that exists in the United States at this time, and to do that uniformly on all the front rows around the ballpark," Matwick said.

Shannon Stone, a Brownwood firefighter, died less than an hour after he tumbled headfirst over a rail out of the seats in left field during a game July 7. Stone fell about 20 feet to concrete behind the outfield wall after reaching out to catch a ball tossed his way by All-Star outfielder Josh Hamilton.

Matwick said the railing in the area where Stone fell is 34 inches.

The day after Stone's fatal fall, the Rangers were already in contact with city officials, as well as ballpark contractors and architects, about how to ensure safety for fans attending games played in the American League champion's stadium.

Rangers Ballpark workers on Tuesday were placing the yellow stickers on rails along the front rows. There had already been such warning signs in place, but mostly at the base of aisles. Now there are numerous signs along the rail in each section.

Matwick said the team is hopeful that the architectural and engineering studies will be completed in "probably a few weeks." He said the process has already begun to measure each rail section to verify exactly what is in place.

No work on the railings can be done until the studies are completed. Those will help determine if new railing will be needed or if current railing can be updated at the stadium that opened in 1994.

"We need to check and make sure that the way that the rails are currently anchored can support additional structure on top," Matwick said. "It's just a question of whether it can be done in existing structure or whether it has to be retrofitted. It's not a question of whether or not it can be done, just a question of whether or not we have to retrofit. That could potentially take some more time, we just don't know that yet."

Matwick said the team's goal would be to start the work on the railings "during the season if we absolutely can." He said it was difficult now to determine when that would be or when the work could be completed.

"The safety of our fans is our top priority," Rangers president Nolan Ryan said in a news release. "The initiatives we are announcing today for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington will help to ensure that we meet that priority."

Ryan was released Tuesday from a Houston hospital after being tested for a heart ailment.

The advertising in the Des Moines media market is scheduled to begin Monday and run through the Iowa Republican Party straw poll on Aug. 13, according to information provided to The Associated Press by Republican media trackers.

Pawlenty, who this month became the first to begin airing candidate ads, is on pace to have spent more than $430,000 on advertising in Iowa through mid-August.

By this time four years ago, Mitt Romney had spent roughly $1.5 million on television advertising in Iowa. Romney, little-known nationally in early 2007, began advertising in Iowa in February that year. He went on to win the August straw poll and finish second in the caucuses the following January.

Romney, who is again seeking the GOP nomination, is putting far less emphasis on Iowa this time. For now, he is focusing more on New Hampshire, home of the first-in-the-nation primary.

But in early media buys, the presidential field has largely ignored New Hampshire voters.

GOP candidates have so far invested just $54,000 in the first-in-the-nation primary state; Texas Rep. Ron Paul accounts for $44,000 of that. Meanwhile, the Republican field has spent almost $690,000 in Iowa.

Pawlenty became the first candidate to air campaign ads on Iowa television with a late June spot introducing himself. Last week, his campaign launched a new ad where he discusses his record in Minnesota.

Pawlenty aides said they expect to introduce new ads in the coming weeks but declined to discuss their themes.

While Pawlenty has spent more than any of his rivals, the entire field has spent less than $750,000 on television and radio advertising time, far less than Republican candidates had at this point in the 2008 race.

Romney has spent nothing on television advertising to date, despite having ended the quarter with $12.6 million on hand, vastly more than any of his rivals.

Paul is second in advertising spending at $167,000, and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has spent $120,000. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is last with $19,000 spent on advertising.

Israelis, Palestinians march for Palestinian state (AFP)

JERUSALEM (AFP) ? Some 1,000 Israelis and Palestinians gathered in east Jerusalem on Friday for a protest march to support the Palestinian bid for United Nations recognition.

The marchers waved Palestinian flags and carried signs reading "marching to independence" and "only free people can negotiate for peace," an AFP photographer said.

The Palestinians plan to ask the UN General Assembly to recognise a Palestinian state when the world body gathers in September, a move opposed by Israel, which says progress can only be made through negotiations.

"This march has been considered by many as carrying special significance, since it will serve as a litmus test for the extent of popular support among Israelis and Palestinians for the diplomatic efforts for a declaration of independence," organisers said in a statement.

Organisers said they planned to march from the Old City to the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah, the site of weekly protests against efforts by Jewish settlers to move into largely Arab neighbourhoods in the city.

The route is the reverse of a march held last month by right-wing Israeli youth to commemorate Israel's capture of east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Israel later annexed east Jerusalem, claiming it as it as its "undivided and eternal capital," a move that has not been recognised by the international community.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their would-be state.

Organisers had said they feared right-wing Israeli groups would try to disrupt the march, but there were no immediate signs of disturbance amid a heavy police presence.

A minute with: Harry Potter director David Yates (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? British director David Yates has spent the last six and half years of his life bringing the wizard world of Harry Potter to the big screen.

The 47 year old has made the final four of the eight films based on the top-selling books by author J.K. Rowling films.

But as the franchise comes to an end with the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" this week, Yates talked to Reuters about putting a full stop on an epic experience and what he plans to do next.

Q: Why did you sign on to do these movies?

A: "It was too good of an opportunity to pass up. I hadn't read the books and they asked me, 'Would you like to do it?' I was like 'Oh my God, I'd better read a book.' It was so funny and charming and I quickly read the second one. It was a difficult world to walk away from, and once I started, everybody was really great. They asked me to stay and I said yes. And they asked me to stay and I said yes again, and I didn't want to be the bloke who made the two in the middle."

Q: Like the middle child?

A: "Yeah, exactly. And no one takes you that seriously. So I stayed."

Q: Was it a conscious decision to keep the atmosphere of this film rather mature?

A: "One way to keep the whole series fresh is to keep making it grow old with the audience and that's the most important thing for me. (The audience) may have been six or seven or eight and they are 16, 17 and 19 now ... They don't want to be patronized with cute stuff anymore. Also, little kids love to be scared. I loved to be scared when I was little."

Q: What are your next moves, now that you have these big blockbusters under your belt?

A: "I am going to make a small film next -- a very lean, mean, small film with a tiny budget. I don't know what it is yet. With big movies, you get slightly indulged because everything is there. And it is not healthy. You need to step away from that and be challenged again."

Q: Your first movie was "When I was a Girl", how have you grown as a director since then?

A: "Wow. It nearly killed me making that. It was 16 minutes long and nearly killed me. Because making your first film is your hardest film to ever make. All these muscles start to develop and it's painful. At that time I was much more interested in lenses and cameras and all that gear. You get obsessed with the wrong things. The biggest way I have changed is I care about the things that really matter, which are the story, acting, writing, and mise-en-scene of the story telling. I am less obsessed with dollies now."

Q: What characteristics do you want people to look for in knowing they are watching a Yates film?

A: "You know it's a really hard question to answer because I often get asked that question. But I asked (producer) David Heyman, 'Why did you choose me and why did you keep me for four films?' And he said, 'You're work has humanity in it. You really love the characters and there is a warmth and empathy with the characters and I love that.' So honestly, I have no idea, or when I retire I'll look back and know."
