Silbert to top Birmingham

Roxana Silbert, an associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has been appointed as a.d. of Birmingham Repertory Theater Company. The move follows the announcement in December 2010 that Rachel Kavanaugh was stepping down after four years. Silbert's appointment, two years ahead of the theater's centenary, is the latest in a chain of changes at the top in major U.K. theatres that began with Josie Rourke's appointment to the Donmar Warehouse following the ankling of Michael Grandage. Rourke formally takes up the post in January 2012; her replacement at the Bush Theater has yet to be announced. Ditto thriving regional house Salisbury Playhouse, which is currently interviewing for an a.d. following the ankling of Philip Wilson to pursue a freelance career.Other houses looking to appoint artistic directors include the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Off West End experimental home The Gate and Scottish new writing powerhouse the Traverse Theater in Edinburgh. Meanwhile, the National Theater Studio, the hothouse for new work which has overseen the development of projects including "War Horse" and "London Road," is also looking for a new leader following the departure of Purni Morrell, who has been appointed as a.d. of The Unicorn, the U.K.'s premier theater for young people.
