Blood Is Man?s Most Powerful Agent?Biologically & Spiritually (part 1)

Article by Denis Van Loan

Blood has a stunning and amazing similarity of function both biologically as well as spiritually. It points to a common Designer and Producer.

Most would agree that man has a spiritual component in his nature. It comes through blood. Primitive as well as sophisticated peoples have all looked to a spiritual element or source in their life. Some believe in multiple spirits that could be solicited and connected with for help or protection. Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths all believe in one supreme, all powerful God who sustains life. Blood is an amazing key to spirituality.

I would like to elaborate on the spiritual dynamics of blood from a Christian perspective. Spiritually, man gains and sustains his spiritual, as well as biological life, through blood. While the bulk of this text is from a book I published on the nature of man? body, soul and spirit, anyone can use this copyrighted material as long as recognition to the source is given. The entire book is available as a free download. (see bio at the end)

Blood is truly an amazing substance; let us investigate its efficacy in the biological realm as well as the spiritual realm. We see a strong parallel in the spiritual and biologic realm through the seven facets of blood function?wholeness, preservation, cleansing/purification, healing, protection/victory, deliverance and freedom. The core theme of Christian belief is that Jesus provides the bridge between humanity and divinity, through His sacrificial blood. Christians believe they become children of God through Jesus? blood sacrificed for them. How does this belief in salvation through Jesus? blood parallel that of the biological function of blood?

1. Biologically, blood nourishes, mediates wholeness and life. Blood assimilates and distributes all food, minerals, nutrients, water and oxygen to all the cells of the body. If any one of these items is missing, the cells and ultimately, the body, die. Weakness, then compromised function, and finally death results.

1. Spiritually, the blood of Jesus preserves life and wholeness. ?For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.? (Lev 17:11 ? KJV) In John 6:53, we read: ?Jesus said to them, ?I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.??

2. Biologically, blood cleanses, purifies, unemcumbers?sets free. The body metabolism produces many wastes and toxins. The blood is needed to eliminate them. Wastes and toxins cause malaise (ill feeling) and lethargy (weakness); this would ultimately kill the body, poisoning its biochemistry, if allowed to accumulate.

2. Spiritually the blood of Jesus cleanses, purifies, relieves bondage?sets free. In the Old Covenant everything was cleansed and purified with animal blood. In the New Covenant we read in 1 John 1:7: ?But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies (cleanses?some translations) us from all sin?. And again in Hebrews: ?In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness?. (Heb 9:22)

3. Biologically, blood heals. Blood brings all the repair materials and initiates all repair processes of the body. Take, for example, a compound fractured bone. The blood clot forms a sticky, elastic bandage that first stops bleeding. Next, damaged tissue cells in the area release chemicals that in turn cause the accumulation of undifferentiated blood cells. These mesenchymal (undifferentiated? sometimes called stem) cells are believed to respond to the chemicals released from the tissue damage and become differentiated into the kind and number of repair and replacement cells needed. For instance, undifferentiated fibroblast cells differentiate into needed collagen fiber. Other undifferentiated cells differentiate into osteoclasts and osteoblasts. These form cells that are bone eating and bone building cells respectively. Both types of cells are needed because the damaged cells and mal-aligned bone must be removed as well as replaced with new bone.

The repair job is so good that the repair site is stronger than the original bone. In the event of future trauma, this is the last place to fracture.

3. Spiritually, the blood of Jesus heals. ?But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.? (Is 53:5) Also, in the New Testament: ?He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.? (1 Pet 2:24)

To be continued: Part 2 deals with peace/harmony, protection/victory against evil and life? in parallel, biologically and spiritually.
