After removing almost a dozen cats from the home of a recently deceased woman, the Humane Society of Yuma wants to remind pet owners to have a plan for their animal's care in case of death.
The Humane Society rescued 11 cats and kittens from a home on West Water Street on Friday after their owner died Tuesday.
The woman's daughter, who lives in California, called HSOY to notify them that her mother had been taking care of several cats.
?She didn't know exactly how many, but she thought between 20 and 25,? Sgt. Aaron Acton said.
When the rescue team arrived, they found only 11. ?There could be a few left behind,? Acton said.
The woman's grandson told the team he would keep an eye on the home the next few days to see if any more cats show up.
The cats and kittens are being kept at the shelter and will be available for adoption ?as soon as possible,? Acton said.
?They are all very friendly. Usually in these situations they're pretty feral. I would say 90 percent of the cats we picked up came up to us,.?
The Humane Society pointed out that the organization doesn't normally pick up cats but agreed to do so in this case because of the unusual circumstances.
In addition to being out of town, ?the family had no means to take care of the cats,? Acton said.
The Humane Society also stressed the importance of planning for the care of pets in case their owners die.
?You never know what will happen in life. Be prepared and have a plan in place for your pets. Who will take care of them in case someone dies?? Acton said.
