India party chief Gandhi goes abroad for surgery (AP)

NEW DELHI ? India's ruling Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi has gone abroad for surgery, reportedly to the United States.

The party gave no details of Gandhi's ailment, saying only that she would be gone three weeks.

Party spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi says 64-year-old Gandhi "was recently diagnosed with a medical condition and has been advised surgery." The Press Trust of India says the operation will happen in the U.S.

Italian-born Gandhi is the widow of assassinated Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. She declined the premiership despite leading the party to win 2004 elections.

In her absence the party is being run by a four-member committee including her son, Rahul, who is seen as a prime minister-in-waiting.
