Don't use == to compare Strings, broadly speaking. That compares the equality of the underlying String objects (reference equality), and since you created two of those:String a = "This is a test!"; String b = "This is a";
they're not equal on the object level. What you want for comparing the contents of Strings is equals(), called on one String and passing in another, thusly:
string1.equals(string2)

you need to use the .equals method when comparing Stringsif (a.equals(B)/>)

FWIW .equals() is the way to go, but the following two strings are equal due to a process called string interning.String a = "this is a test"; String b = "this is a test"; System.out.println((a == B)); // true
which isn't happening with the code in the first post (using concatenation +).
The following includes a null check:
System.out.println((a == null ? b == null : a.equals(B))); // true
