George Washington Carver was gay now? What else is the Toronto School Board lying to your kids about?

If you send your children to a Toronto public school, you are guilty of abuse and neglect.

My husband discovers another outrageous ?lesson plan? at the TDSB:

The TDSB chose to participate in the lie about Carver?s sexual orientation because fellow zealots included Carver on the ?Blacklist?, an index of allegedly Gay Black individuals. There is not an ounce of evidence to back up their claim. Even the TDSB admits this but still includes him in their propaganda. Now That?s Racist.

Update- The only copy of the Blacklist we could locate ? does not contain Carver?s name! Now that is despicable!

Bynum, Pistons top short-handed Heat 109-99

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) ? LeBron James and the short-handed Heat were no match for Detroit's brilliant bench.

Will Bynum had 25 points and 10 assists, leading another spirited performance by the Pistons' reserves, and Detroit beat Miami 109-99 on Friday night despite 35 points by James.

Miami was without Dwyane Wade, suspended for a game by the NBA for flailing his leg and making contact with a Charlotte player Wednesday.

The Detroit reserves, who scored 85 points in a loss to Atlanta on Wednesday, contributed 64 this time. Charlie Villanueva had 18 points and Austin Daye added 11, helping the Pistons snap Miami's six-game winning streak.

"Their bench came in and turned it up about 17 notches. We let them get into a comfort zone in the second quarter, and after that, they were making all kinds of contested shots," James said. "It's hard to make any kind of run when a team keeps doing that to you."

The Heat scored the game's first 10 points and led by 15 after one quarter, but the momentum shifted for good when the Pistons outscored Miami 41-20 in the second.

Chris Bosh had 28 points for the Heat.

Miami had cut a 17-point deficit to four early in the fourth, but Detroit's reserves steadied themselves. Rookie big man Andre Drummond scored inside, Villanueva scored after a turnover by James, and a 3-pointer by Bynum pushed the lead back to double digits at 88-77.

"That little split of doubt that you can have ? it's a turnover, it's a missed shot, it's a bad play," Bynum said. "You just have to be aggressive and confident."

That's rarely a problem for Bynum, who looks out of control at times but can lift his team with his energy. He's played in only 22 of Detroit's 32 games this season, but he scored 31 points Wednesday and followed it up with another remarkable performance against the Heat.

"Will kind of got squeezed in the rotation," Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said. "Had several DNPs, stayed the course, and he deserves all the credit."

Detroit led 95-84 after Villanueva corralled a wild pass from Bynum and made a 3-pointer. Daye added a dunk in transition off a slick drop pass from Bynum for a 101-90 lead.

Bynum scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.

"He was amazing," James said. "He controlled the game with his motor and his offense. He was hitting everything and he was getting everyone else involved. We couldn't do anything with him."

The Pistons shot 58 percent from the field to Miami's 51. The Heat had been 31-0 since the beginning of last season when shooting at least 50 percent.

The Heat said before the game they didn't agree with Wade's suspension for making contact with Charlotte's Ramon Sessions earlier in the week.

"That's no excuse. We still had enough," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Obviously, we're a different team with Dwyane, but we have enough depth that we should be able to overcome missing one guy for a night."

Miami breezed through the first quarter, taking a 10-0 lead and eventually making 11 of its first 14 shots. It was 32-17 after one, but the game turned almost immediately.

Detroit's bench was again outstanding. The Pistons scored the first 14 points of the second and finally took a 41-39 lead on Villanueva's 3-pointer.

The bench ? specifically Villanueva, Bynum, Drummond and Daye ? scored 36 of Detroit's 41 points in the quarter, and the Pistons went into halftime with a 58-52 lead.

And that was only the beginning. Miami didn't start the third quarter any better than the second, allowing nine straight points. Greg Monroe's basket made it 76-59, and although the Heat increased the pressure defensively, they didn't always get the results they wanted.

After Shane Battier and James made consecutive 3-pointers to pull Miami within nine, James thought he'd knocked the ball away from Jason Maxiell cleanly near midcourt. But a foul was called and Maxiell made one of two free throws to make it 79-69.

It was 81-71 after three.

NOTES: Udonis Haslem is now Miami's career leader with 620 games played, snapping a tie with Wade because of the suspension. Haslem appeared to hurt his right shoulder early on when landing hard after an acrobatic block on Kyle Singler, but he was able to play on. ... Drummond had 10 points and 10 rebounds. ... James and Bosh were the only Miami players to score in double figures.

LG?s latest projector system is powered by freaking lasers

3 hrs.

Until now, all consumer front projector systems?produced light using lamps or in rare cases LEDs. The new?LG HECTO FP system, on the other hand, uses lasers for illumination instead. Yes, lasers.

As LG announced on Wednesday, the new projector system uses lasers and a Texas Instruments DLP chip to form images. Typical home front projectors require around a 9 to 12 foot distance from the lens to a 100-inch screen. The LG HECTO requires only a 22-inch throw to fill the screen and can be placed on the floor or the mounted to the ceiling.

The LG HECTO Laser Projection TV will be sold as a complete system with a 100-Inch diagonal screen, a built-in ATSC TV tuner, HDMI switching and a Wi-Fi connection for streaming video.

Specifications include a rated 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1080p resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, an optical audio input, RS-232 interface. Audio is produced by two 10W built-in speakers. The projector measures 5.7-inches high. The HECTO Laser projector does not have 3-D capability. LG has not? provided a brightness rating, a key specification. (Lasers offer the promise of very high intensity using low power.)

The screen is a fixed design and unlike theater screens its surface is black not white. LG claims the system will render a vivid, high contrast crisp image, even in lighter viewing environments.

The Laser TV supports LG's Smart TV platform and will stream movies via Netflix?and?YouTube as well as other services and?apps via its built-in Wi-Fi wireless Internet connection. The HECTO also includes LG's latest Magic Remote control.

LG claims its laser based illumination system has a lifespan of up to 25,000 hours, which is 5 times or more the life of traditional mercury-based lamps.

The LG HECTO Laser projector will be demonstrated at the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show early next month. We expect pricing and availability to be announced at the show.

Somali pirates free hostages after nearly 3 years

By NBC News wire services

BOSASSO, Somalia -- A ship and its crew of 22 sailors held by Somali pirates for almost three years have been freed after a two-week-long siege by maritime police, the government of the breakaway region of Puntland said on Sunday.

The sailors aboard Panama-flagged MV Iceberg 1, from the Philippines, India, Yemen, Sudan, Ghana and Pakistan, were held for longer than any other hostages in the power of the pirates, who prey on shipping in the region, according to the president's office of the northern Somali enclave in a statement

Maritime police laid siege to the vessel on Dec. 10 near the coastal village of Gara'ad in the region of Mudug.

"After 2 years and 9 months in captivity, the hostages have suffered signs of physical torture and illness. The hostages are now receiving nutrition and medical care," said the statement.

The ship originally had a crew of 24, but two had died since the roll-on roll-off cargo vessel was seized on March 29, 2010, some 10 miles from Aden, pirates said.

One of the pirate leaders said they only released the ship after negotiation with Puntland officials and local elders.

"They kindly requested the release of the ship we held for three years. Puntland forces had attacked us and tried to release the ship by force but they failed. We fought back and defeated them," the pirate known as Farah told Reuters.

Farah did not disclose whether any ransom had been paid for the crew and the ship, owned by Azal Shipping in Dubai with a deadweight of 4,500 tonnes.

Pirates rarely release ships without ransom, and usually raise their demands the longer they hold a vessel, because they charge for their expenses.

International navies have had some recent success containing piracy in the Indian Ocean.?

Although more than 100 hostages taken off Somalia are still being held captive, the number of hijackings of ships dropped to seven in the first 11 months of this year compared to 24 in the whole of 2011.

Separately, Puntland said a group of eight Puntland soldiers responsible for briefly trying to sail away with a North Korea-flagged vessel, MV Daesan and its 33-member crew were jailed by a Puntland military court on Saturday.

MV Daesan, a North Korean ship ferrying cement to Somali capital Mogadishu, was impounded by the Puntland authorities and fined last month by Puntland authorities who accused it of ditching its cargo off Somalia's coast.

The soldiers had taken the vessel on Dec. 18.

"Puntland Government managed to return the vessel back to the port within 24 hours; the soldiers were arrested and will be brought to justice," the authorities said.

For Somali pirates, the risks of being arrested, killed or lost at sea are overshadowed by the potential for huge payouts. Ransoms for large ships in recent years have averaged close to $5 million. The largest reported ransom was $11 million for the Greek oil tanker MV Irene SL last year.

The ransoms are often air-dropped down to hijacked ships. Somalia has been mired in conflict since President Siad Barre was overthrown by warlords in 1991 who then turned on each other.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this story.

Drones Are Like Structured Finance ? LewRockwell.com Blog

Drone and structured finance are both new technologies. Structured finance products, like securitization of mortgages into tranches including subprime, didn't by themselves cause the financial blowup in 2007 and 2008. They were operating as a financial innovation within a bigger game of mortgage creation and a housing bubble pushed by the government and the FED. In the same way, drone warfare is a killing innovation. It's not a first cause of the bubble in the U.S. kills of people overseas. It's an innovation within something bigger, which is the U.S. initiated "war on terror."

That war never was a real war. It never was declared. It never had an identifiable enemy. It never had clear aims that would bring it to a close, if it were a war. The "war on terror" was a convenient blanket term to cover attacks on Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama retired the term "war on terror" from his official vocabulary, but the administration still speaks of terrorism, counterterrorism and kill lists.

What happened with structured finance and what's happening with drones is that the adoption and increased use of the technologies come to have an independent effect on the underlying phenomena, the housing bubble and the war on terror's killing bubble. Being effective and low-cost technologies, they heighten the bubbles as people use them intensively. The indiscriminate use or broad use or overuse of these technologies cause problems all their own? and, in the hands of their users, who were investment bankers and now U.S. government officials,? they become contributory causes of new problems.

I've run across a 3-month old article by a member of the Leadership, Rosa Brooks. You can read it here or here. What led me to this was my interest in nearby Niagara Falls Air Base being turned into a drone center, for the Leadership cannot think of anything better for American men and women to do than to produce death and spying at a distance, for export and for domestic use.

Brooks doesn't condemn the War on Terror, or empire, or any of the basic causes that have driven the overseas killing machine of the U.S. government and made welcome to it the drone technology; but she does recognize that unrestricted drone killing has serious drawbacks to the U.S. government and the rule of law. It's always good to find criticism of government coming from within the Leadership itself. Hers are both direct and indirect. I'll mention a few.

She indirectly admits that the U.S. killing machine overseas is more or less unbounded, and the use of drones has made it even more unbounded because drones lower the cost of killing. The killing machine is not hemmed in by law or morality. It is not restrained by objections coming from mass society due to the costs or due to Americans getting killed and injured. It is not restrained by the mass conscience, so to speak, of mass society. She writes:

"If killing a suspected terrorist based in Yemen or Somalia will endanger expensive manned aircraft, the lives of U.S. troops and/or the lives of many innocent civilians, U.S. officials will reserve such killings for situations of extreme urgency and gravity (stopping another 9/11, finally getting Osama bin Laden). But if all that appears to be at risk is an easily replaceable drone, officials will be tempted to use lethal force more and more casually.

"And this, of course, is exactly what has been happening over the last four years. Increasingly, drone strikes have targeted militants who are lower and lower down the terrorist food chain, rather than terrorist masterminds. Strikes increasingly target individuals who pose speculative, distant future threats rather than only those posing urgent or catastrophic threats. And drone strikes have spread ever further from 'hot' battlefields, migrating from Pakistan to Yemen to Somalia (and perhaps to Mali and the Philippines as well). Although drone strikes are believed to have killed more than 3,000 people since 2004, only a tiny fraction of the dead appear to have been so-called 'high-value targets'."

Ms. Brooks admits that the killing is going on in secret, "...President Obama?s administration still refuses to openly acknowledge that the CIA uses drone strikes anywhere other than Pakistan (and this was acknowledged only recently and grudgingly."

She admits that the War on Terror has no ending: "But outside Afghanistan, the United States is not in a conventional war. It?s in an open-ended conflict with an inchoate, undefined adversary..."

She admits that no one outside the officials who direct the killing even know who the enemies or combatants are..."administration assertions about who is a combatant and what constitutes a threat are entirely non-falsifiable because they?re based wholly on undisclosed evidence."

She admits that the U.S. killings in this "murky context" are operating way beyond the law:

"In this murky context, it?s facile to assert that the law of war 'obviously' applies to all U.S. drone strikes and leave it at that. That amounts, in practice, to a claim that the executive branch has the unreviewable power to kill anyone, anywhere, at any time, based on secret criteria and secret information discussed in a secret process by largely anonymous individuals."

It becomes clear that Brooks is very worried about an Executive that operates a secret killing operation over large portions of the world with few restraints on a basis that asks everyone else to "trust" them. She writes "Do we really want to live in a world in which the U.S. government?s justification for killing is so malleable?" and "...'trust us' is a pretty shaky foundation for the rule of law."

Her other pragmatic or utilitarian worries about unrestricted drone warfare are equally of note. She argues that the U.S. is setting very dangerous precedents. Drones are very cheap. Other nations can use them secretly too, as the U.S. has, and they can cry "terrorist" just as vaguely and indiscriminately as the U.S. has: "Other states ? and ultimately, nonstate actors ? will follow America?s example, and the results won?t be pretty."

Another of her reservations is that the drone strikes are creating more terrorists than they are killing. Another is they are destabilizing societies.

While all of these criticisms and more have been voiced by libertarian and other critics of U.S. policies and the Empire, it is good to see the critique making its way into the Leadership. Ms. Brooks is a lawyer whose writing here shows a concern for the rule of law. It's unclear precisely what she wants, other than some kind of legal framework to control drone use and perhaps control the Executive. Such vagueness is often the case in the intramural struggles within the Leadership. It's only when a person abandons the Leadership or any hope of getting ahead within it or any dependence on its favors that the possibility of radical critiques opens up.

Abandon the Empire.

UPDATE: Here are two more examples of innovations that have become overused. These were sent to me by a correspondent.

Electroshock weapons, or the taser. Their wide adoption by police was supposed to substitute for other forms of violence at lower cost, but the taser has resulted in more violence and deaths. Police shootings seem not to have declined. Reports of the public's misuse of civilian tasers are much harder to find than reports of police misuse.

Anti-depressants. These were supposed to improve upon drugs like Valium. Their wide adoption and over-prescription by government-licensed doctors have resulted in far more side effects and sometimes suicidal/homicidal behavior in some persons.

I wonder if there is a general law at work here concerning innovations in the hands of government and government-regulated industries making matters worse. This has been true of military innovation, poison gas, and WMD. Government tinkering around with uncurable and easily spread viruses is clearly a danger.

Year in movies: Time to punch a wolf

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Familiar faces, many celebrating major milestones, dominated the year in movies. James Bond turned 50 with a huge hit in "Skyfall," Marvel's "Avengers" finally assembled on the big screen, and the "Twilight" franchise finally bowed out -- just in time for "The Hunger Games" to move in and set up camp.

Lionsgate, MGM, New Line, Summit

"The Hunger Games," "Skyfall," "Breaking Dawn Part 2" and "The Hobbit" were among the big films this year.

Here are some of the highlights -- and lowlights -- of the year in film. (Warning: Spoilers ahoy!)

JANUARY
'The Grey'
Liam Neeson punches a wolf in the face! Or not, but the trailer made it seem like he did, resulting in a great Internet meme. ?Also, who wouldn't buy this film's upbeat soundtrack, which includes such peppy numbers as "You Are Gonna Die," "Wife Memory" and "Running From Wolves"?

'The Devil Inside'
Plus side: This exorcism movie was a huge box-office success! Down side: It was horrible! Plus side: Slate suggested the film has the "worst ending of all time"! (Viewers are told to go to a website.) Down side: You've now got that INXS song stuck in your head, don't you? Every single one of us, the devil inside.

FEBRUARY
'Woman in Black'

Spooky setting, but the Daniel Radcliffe-starring horror film critics dubbed "Scary Potter" was all trick and no treat.?

'Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" in 3-D
We didn't even enjoy this one in regular D.?

'Secret World of Arrietty'
Finally, a sweet Valentine's Day treat. Kids and parents alike were enchanted by this little-seen Japanese animated film (dubbed in English, by Carol Burnett among others) based on the beloved "Borrowers" books.?

MARCH
'Dr. Seuss' The Lorax'
He is the Lorax, he speaks for the trees. This adaptation of the good doctor's book earned mixed reviews, but Ed Helms stood out as the tree-chopping, finally redeemed Once-ler.?

'John Carter'
Let's suppose it's a good idea to spend a quarter of a billion dollars on a movie. Don't make it this movie. ?"Will you stay and fight for Helium?" is one line. Uh, no, we're gonna go see if Hydrogen has anything better to offer.

'21 Jump Street'
No one had high hopes for "21 Jump Street," a big-screen version of the 1980s TV show about baby-face cops. But then stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, and a witty and raunchy script shook things up, resulting in a hilarious, fast-moving comedy that paid all the proper homage to its retro forebears without groveling.?

'The Hunger Games'
Yes, another huge-selling book series becomes a movie series. But somehow -- maybe due to the lack of vampires -- "The Hunger Games" was taken a lot more seriously than "Twilight." Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) made archery look cool, and fans from all Districts can't wait for the next three movies.

APRIL
'Titanic 3-D'
Spoiler: The boat sinks. Again.

'Cabin in the Woods'
This is not your grandfather's horror movie. Witty and sharp, "Cabin" picks up the entire slasher-film genre upside-down, screams in its face and drives it round the bend.?

'Lockout'
The movie many dubbed "Escape From Space Prison" would have been much better if it had Snake Plissken. Guy Pearce is no Kurt Russell.

MAY
'The Avengers'
Marvel's superhero group deserved a great big-screen debut, and they got it. Best line: When team leader Captain America finishes handing out complicated instructions to his team members, then simply turns to the big green guy and says, "Hulk. Smash."?

'Dark Shadows'
Barnabas Collins was many a 1970s girl's first heartthrob, and "Dark Shadows" fans eagerly awaited this movie version of the vampire soap opera. But Johnny Depp, who'd long announced that he was a big fan of the show and character, let everyone down by turning the beloved title into a groaningly bad parody with maybe one funny line. ("Reveal yourself, tiny songstress," Depp's Barnabas demands of a TV displaying Karen Carpenter singing.)

'The Dictator'
There was sure a lot of fuss about "The Dictator" before it came out, with star Sacha Baron Cohen insisting on wearing his "Dictator" costume to the Oscars and dumping fake Kim Jong-Il ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Too bad that when the movie came out, it was so unfunny as to be quickly forgotten.?

'Battleship'
Yes, the idea of a movie based on the popular board game is goofy, but entertain yourself ticking off the specific game references. The aliens shoot pegs at each other! Strikes are plotted on a computer with the traditional "E-11!" wording familiar from the game! Bring on the sure-to-be-Oscar-candidate "Hungry, Hungry Hippos"!

JUNE
'Snow White and the Huntsman'
Will forever be known as "that movie where Kristen Stewart cheated on Robert Pattinson with the director." Guess he thought she was the fairest of them all.

'Prometheus'
After all the fuss about whether this was or wasn't an "Alien" prequel ... they should've just gone ahead and made an "Alien" prequel.?

'That's My Boy'
Pedophilia, incest and?statutory?rape! Adam Sandler has come a long way from the sweet innocence of "The Wedding Singer," and we wish he'd go back there, pronto. One of the worst-reviewed films of the year.?

'Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter'
Eagerly awaiting the sequels. "Millard Fillmore: Mummy Wrangler" and "James K. Polk: Loch Ness Monster Spotter."?

'Brave'
It's not Pixar's best, but this latest animated film does present a fiery-haired princess who's not your mother's Cinderella.

'Magic Mike'
Now brides-to-be and bachelorettes who are too shy to go out to Chippendales have the perfect movie to rent for their parties. ?Matthew McConaughey's star-spangled stripper costume will ensure you never look at Uncle Sam the same way again.

JULY
'Amazing Spider-Man'
A sparkling reboot for the webslinger, with "Social Network" star Andrew Garfield (and Emma Stone as girlfriend Gwen Stacy) giving the beloved character a fresh feel.?

'Dark Knight Rises'
It'll now forever be associated with the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colo., but the film painted a dazzling end to Christopher Nolan's Caped Crusader trilogy. And holy sidekicks, Batman, was that really Robin??

AUGUST
'Total Recall'
Colin Farrell's great and all, but you can't replace Arnold Schwarzenegger in an action movie. No one do this going forward. But kudos for the return of the three-breasted hooker.?

'The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure'
You never heard of this kids' movie. No one ever heard of this kids' movie. That's why it became the biggest box-office bomb of all time for films released in 2,000+ theaters. Cost: $60 million if you include marketing. Made: $1 million. That's not a typo.?

SEPTEMBER
'Hotel Transylvania'
Adam Sandler slightly redeems himself (slightly) for "That's My Boy" by providing the voice of a loyal dad vampire who runs a hotel for monsters and doesn't want his batty daughter dating a human.?

'Looper'
It's no "Inception," but Joseph Gordon-Levitt's September sci-fi flick gave moviegoers that same shaky sense of weirdness, introducing them to a universe where time travel is real, yet used only by future mobsters, with creepy implications.?

OCTOBER
'Taken 2'
There are no wolves, but Liam Neeson is still Mister Not To Be Messed With.?

'Argo'
Thought you knew all about the Iranian hostage crisis? You didn't know about this Iranian hostage crisis. Wonderfully worth seeing, 1970s hair and all.?

NOVEMBER
'Wreck-It Ralph'
What happens to your favorite video-game characters after the arcade shuts down for the night? Turns out they have a whole slammin' lifestyle, fighting Cybugs and having candy go-kart races, and in the end, a new hero is made.

'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2'
Apparently the second half of Stephenie Meyer's book wasn't bloody enough, so the film introduces a whole new sequence that ... well, let's just say we hope you didn't get too attached to some of your favorite characters from Films 1-4. What's that in the field ahead? Er, we mean, "what's that in the field? A head?"

'Skyfall'
James Bond is back, celebrating 50 years of the spy franchise in what might be the most purely enjoyable blockbuster of the year. Q, M and other letters of the alphabet play major roles.

'Lincoln'
Turns out our beloved sixteenth president didn't actually fight vampires, instead he fought an intense backroom battle to pass the amendment banning slavery. And also told some great folksy stories. And made one fateful trip to the theater.?

DECEMBER
'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'
The first of three Peter Jackson films breaking down J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved book takes a while to get started, but once the dwarves are done with their burping contests and have broken most of Bilbo's mother's china, the quest begins. Mountain trolls and goblins and orcs, oh my!?

'Django Unchained'
Quentin Tarantino's back, with all the witty dialogue, artfully flowing blood and controversy that ensues. Jamie Foxx plays a slave-turned-bounty-hunter who teams up with the wonderful Christoph Waltz to make the best unlikely duo of the year.

'Les Miserables'
Do you hear the people sing??Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne bring the famed Broadway musical to your local mall.?Even if you can't pronounce it, even if all you know of the music is that Susan Boyle sang one song and George Costanza another, "Les Mis" is a nearly three-hour trip worth taking.?

Is 'Christmas Shoes' worst holiday song ever?

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Sure, some Christmas songs are worth a listen -- check out our list of 10 that aren't completely lame. But others .. hoo boy, hear them once and you're diving for the extra-strength candy-cane-striped holiday Advil. Which doesn't exist, but should.

According to Jennifer Rutherford, a California collector of terrible holiday songs (she owns more than 600), bad Christmas tunes should be divided into two piles. Call them naughty and nice, or perhaps "good tacky" and "bad tacky."

"I consider 'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer' to be good tacky because it's a joke," she told TODAY. "'Christmas Shoes' (however) is meant in all terrible sincerity and yet everyone hates and makes fun of it. Bad tacky."

"Christmas Shoes" is a song released in 2000 by the band NewSong and later covered by country group 3 of Hearts. It's based on an urban legend about a boy who lacks the money to buy a pair of new shoes for his dying mother. The song's narrator supplies the extra money so the boy's mother can wear the shoes, "if Mama meets Jesus tonight." A book and a TV movie both based on the song came out in 2002.

"(The)?audience (for 'Christmas Shoes') is intended to actually like it and find it touching," says Rutherford, "However, in most people it provokes a divine rage, gasps of horror, and a brilliant rant by Patton Oswalt. Bad tacky is like finding syrupy angel statues in a country store. You're supposed to find it cute and enjoyable, but all you feel is nausea."

On the "good tacky" side, Rutherford likes parody and humor songs of the type you might hear on Dr. Demento's (now online-only) radio show. She says she thinks of "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" as the start of the "good tacky" movement in holiday songs.

Sony

"Grandma" is a 1979 novelty song sung by then-husband-and-wife duo Elmo and Patsy, and the title perfectly summarizes the plot. ("You can say there's no such thing as Santa, but as for me and Grandpa, we believe," run part of the lyrics.)

"'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer' is supposed to be a joke, you are supposed to be amused by it. It's silly and tacky, but in a fun way," Rutherford says. "It's like buying products at stores like Spencer's Gifts -- you know it's supposed to be amusing kitsch."

Here are some of Rutherford's other nominations, for both the good and bad tacky lists.

Good tacky:
1. "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"

2, "Christmas Is All Around," performed by the character Billy Mack in the movie "Love Actually."
Says Rutherford: "Billy Mack is incredible at making a putrid product that makes you laugh, because he's in on the joke."

3. "Teach Me How to Understand Christmas," performed by the character Annie Edison on "Community." ?
Rutherford calls this one an "amazing horror of a song," explaining that it "takes the concept behind the song 'Santa Baby' to its hellish logical conclusion."

4. "Dang It, I'm Vixen," performed by Hometown on the album "Truckers Christmas."
The whole album is a treat, says Rutherford, noting that other song titles include "Christmas Comes on Eighteen Wheels" and "Santa, Bring Me a Brand New Dream Machine." In this song, she says, reindeer Vixen "thinks Rudolph has become a suckup and a snob, and he's looking to kick some reindeer booty."

Bad tacky:
1. "Christmas Shoes"

2. ?"Little Drummer Boy," by numerous artists.
Yes, a classic to many, but as Rutherford notes, it's ruined by three things. "What brand new mother wants you playing a drum around the baby?" she asks. "(Also), in almost all recordings I've ever heard of this song, THERE ARE NO DRUMS." She also points out that "Pa-rum-pa-pum-pum is a funeral dirge-y chorus that drags through your head like Marley's chains."

3. "A Walking Talking Christmas Tree," by Gene London.
Rutherford calls this lesser-known gem "so twinkly and treacle-y that you want to vomit at its cuteness within the first few seconds. " The topic of the song also bothers her. ?"The writer of this song never thought about is how horrible it would be to be a sentient tree," she says. "That tree has been CUT DOWN, folks. It lives in your house for a few weeks and then you kick it to the curb in January. You really want that poor tree to be walking and talking around your house? You think that tree is gonna be happy about that?"

4. "Baby It's Cold Outside."
"This is a song covered by many people in many different ways," Rutherford says. "Depending on who's doing it, it can come out sweet to tacky to OH DEAR GOD HE'S PUTTING ROOFIES IN HER DRINK."?Although there are many versions, Rutherford especially is creeped out by one sung by John Lithgow and Bebe Neuwirth.

What do you think is the worst Christmas song? Is it good tacky, or bad tacky? Tell us on Facebook.

Dropbox continues media acquisition binge with photo aggregator Snapjoy

Dropbox is further framing up its media ambitions with the acquisition of photo service Snapjoy, coming hot on the heels of its Audiogalaxy purchase and photo-centric Dropbox 2.0 iOS launch. Snapjoy lets you archive and view all your photos from one place, whether they're stocked on your camera, smartphone, PC or sites like Flickr and Instagram. The terms of the purchase weren't disclosed, but the two companies know each other well, having each scored seed money, advice and connections from the co-called Y Combinator venture capital program. In a blog post, Snapjoy said it's stopped accepting any new signups as part of the deal, though it assured current users that they "can continue to use Snapjoy to share and enjoy photos just as you do now." It added that the sale will bring its service to more than 100 million users, and it looks to give Dropbox new options in the photo space currently occupied by the likes of Flickr, Picasa and new partner Facebook -- who recently launched its own Photo Sync service.

(AP) ? Trent Richardson would be surprised if Nick Saban followed him from Alabama to the Cleveland Browns.

Saban, who will lead the Crimson Tide against Notre Dame in the BCS national championship game in Miami on Jan. 7, has been mentioned as returning to the NFL, perhaps with the Browns if second-year coach Pat Shurmur is fired at season's end.

"I can't see him coming to the NFL," Richardson said Wednesday. "I would be very shocked."

And Richardson knows the coach quite well. After all, he was a standout running back for Saban at Alabama before being selected in the first round by Cleveland in April. Richardson ran for 1,679 yards last season for the Crimson Tide.

"How can you get tired of winning," Richardson asked. "He's got so much going there. He has no reason to leave. He gets what he needs and he treats his program like the NFL (anyway). He makes sure his players are prepared for the game and prepared for the next level when the time comes."

Any exit to the NFL wouldn't be foreign to Saban, who led Alabama to national titles in 2009 and 2011. He left his post at LSU, in fact, to become coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005. After going 15-17 in two seasons there, he went back to the SEC, this time in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

"I can see him staying at Alabama," Richardson said, "and retiring at Alabama."

Saban, who played and coached at Kent State, has Cleveland roots, as well. He was the Browns defensive coordinator from 1991-94, which has helped to spark the speculation.

"I don't believe it," Richardson said. "Rumors are rumors. I don't buy into it and that's one thing he taught me to do ? not buy into rumors."

Richardson is more concerned with playing the playoff-bound Denver Broncos (11-3) on Sunday. The No. 3 overall pick is 46 yards shy of surpassing Hall of Fame standout Jim Brown's 55-year-old team rookie rushing record of 942 yards for the Browns (5-9).

"I'm ready for a big day," Richardson said. "Anytime Jim Brown's name is mentioned, it is big for me. Huge."

Richardson, who missed all of training camp after having minor surgery on his left knee in July, has already set a new franchise rookie mark with 11 rushing touchdowns. Overall, he has 258 carries for 897 yards.

"I'm good to go," he said. "No issues with the knee. None. With the ribs, I am not going to stop playing ball. I am going to keep on going no matter what."

All that said, he did reveal for the first time that he occasionally had trouble breathing in his first few games with the injury. He has adjusted his mindset to ignore the pain. He doesn't anticipate difficulty in Denver's mile-high thin air.

"I've never played there, but I'll be OK," he said. "If I need oxygen, I'll take it and go play."

Shurmur has not considered resting Richardson, either.

"He'll play," he said. "None of us are 100 percent right now. I think that's fair to say at this time of year. Guys are playing through things."

___

NOTES: DB Dmitri Patterson, released by Cleveland on Monday, landed with Miami. Shurmur declined to say why Patterson was cut: "I'm not going to talk about the whys or what-fors there. I will say this though, I'm happy for him that he's going to be able to finish out the year in Miami. That will be great for him." ... TE Jordan Cameron (head) and DL Frostee Rucker (groin) did not practice. ... WR Jordan Norwood practiced for the first time since sustaining a foot injury Oct. 7. He's not on the active roster. ... TE George Bryan was signed to the practice squad. He played at N.C. State (2008-11) and was in camp with Dallas last spring. ... The Browns are 3-0 vs. the AFC West, with the first-place Broncos on deck.

Liquid metal used to create wires that stretch eight times their original length

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Researchers from North Carolina State University have created conductive wires that can be stretched up to eight times their original length while still functioning. The wires can be used for everything from headphones to phone chargers, and hold potential for use in electronic textiles.

To make the wires, researchers start with a thin tube made of an extremely elastic polymer and then fill the tube with a liquid metal alloy of gallium and indium, which is an efficient conductor of electricity.

"Previous efforts to create stretchable wires focus on embedding metals or other electrical conductors in elastic polymers, but that creates a trade-off," says Dr. Michael Dickey, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the research.

"Increasing the amount of metal improves the conductivity of the composite, but diminishes its elasticity," Dickey says. "Our approach keeps the materials separate, so you have maximum conductivity without impairing elasticity. In short, our wires are orders of magnitude more stretchable than the most conductive wires, and at least an order of magnitude more conductive than the most stretchable wires currently in the literature."

While the manufacturing of the new wires is relatively straightforward, Dickey notes that one challenge needs to be addressed before the wires can be considered for popular products: how to minimize leakage of the metal if the wires are severed.

The paper, "Ultrastretchable Fibers with Metallic Conductivity Using a Liquid Metal Alloy Core," is published online in Advanced Functional Materials. The paper was co-authored by Shu Zhu, a former undergraduate at NC State; Dr. Ju-Hee So, a former Ph.D. student at NC State; Robin Mays and William Barnes, Ph.D. students at NC State; Dr. Sharvil Desai, a former postdoctoral researcher at NC State; and Dr. Behnam Pourdeyhimi, the William A. Klopman Distinguished Chaired Professor of Materials in NC State's College of Textiles and a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering in the university's College of Engineering.

The research was funded by a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award and the NSF's Research Triangle Materials Research Science & Engineering Center.

The Nike Air Force 1 Pivot Point lands in Japan

Japan joins the Lunar Force 1 celebration with its own pop-up retail destination.

In the 30 years since the birth of the Nike Air Force 1, the world has seen myriad colorways and updates as the shoe became ingrained in lifestyle and sport culture around the world. As the iconic shoe moves into the future, Nike Sportswear is celebrating its rich heritage by opening a pop-up shop in the heart of Shibuya -- Japan's premier center for youth culture. It's the second Pivot Point shop to open this month; the first opened in Brooklyn, New York on Dec. 11.

The Pivot Point pop-up will be open until Dec. 24 and showcase the future of force ? the Nike Lunar Force 1 and the rest of the Family of Force as well as other can't-miss specialty releases. The title references a pattern that's almost as recognizable as the shoe itself: the trademark ?Pivot Point? outsole pattern of the Air Force 1, which allows basketball players to spin 360 degrees with one foot planted on the court. To celebrate the opening, a pair of special Nike Air Force 1 Foamposite Lows became available for the first day only in a very limited number.

Pivot Point Shibuya also offers the opportunity for immersion into the rich culture of New York basketball through screenings of several documentaries including "Doin? It In The Park," directed by Bobbito Garcia -- an avid sneaker collector and a key player in the NYC basketball scene.

Pivot Point is located at Jinnan 1-9-5, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo and will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday to Sunday.

Simmons Field lease is approved | KenoWi

Northwoods_League_LogoThe topic of the Simmons Athletic Field lease between the city, the Board of Park Commissioners, and Baseball Like It Oughta Be, LLC, and the Northwoods League, Inc., was on the agendas of both the Finance Committee and the Common Council meetings tonight.? Vern Stenman and Conor Caloia were the two representatives from the Northwoods League present at both meetings to answer questions.

Alderperson David Bogdala said that he was in attendance at the public meeting held last Tuesday.? To read the article on that meeting, click here:? ?Simmons Field Meeting.?? Bogdala made several amendments to the lease, including inserting a security deposit performance bond, a renaming clause, language regarding the sale of alcohol and wine beverages, fireworks displays, and handicapped access.?? He said, ?If these are not detailed, written in the contract, we?ll have problems down the road.?? Bogdala?s motion to amend the lease at the Finance Committee failed for lack of a second.

Alderperson Tod Ohnstad made a motion to approve the contract as is.? Bodgala?s comments were that ?he was hopeful, but this was not unexpected.?? He felt that there were some definite issues with the current contract.

Chairman of the Finance Committee and Alderperson Daniel Prozanski said that he received the lease via e-mail last week with the 42-page document attached.? The city attorney reviewed the lease, and it was negotiated with the two representatives from the Northwoods League.? Prozanski said that he got his questions answered.? ?Now, at the 11th hour, with 59 minutes to spare, we get another lease to review, to protect the citizens of the city.?? Bogdala said that, ?As long as I sit on this committee, I will be reviewing and providing feedback on any contract/lease the city is involved in.? We?re not done til we?re done with it.? This lease requires Parks, Finance, and Common Council approval.? The changes I?m proposing have to do with breach of contract, legal ramifications, and gaps that are open to interpretation.?? Prozanski?s issue was that he was just given Bogdala?s document tonight.? ?If my colleague wants consideration, then I need time to consider it.? I?m satisfied with the document, that the city?s interests are protected,? he said.

Prozanski asked Frank Pacetti, the city administrator, was asked to delineate the $1 million in improvements.? His reply was that the team would be spending $250,000 on capital improvements to the field, and the city would be contributing $750,000.? The sources for the city?s money were in the form of rent paid to the city ($30,000/year for 10 years), $300,000, $100,000 in insurance proceeds due to the fire at the Alford Storage Building, and the remaining $350,000 would come from park impact fees from the district, and cell tower revenue.

Prozanski wanted to know how the $300,000 was going to be guaranteed, and assistant city attorney Jon Mulligan replied that, if the work was not completed by May 1, 2014, the city would be under no further obligation to continue with the lease.

Ohnstad said that, ?There was no gun to my head.? This was a good proposal.? It was vetted six months ago.? I read it and understood it.? I?m voting for it tonight, and I?m looking forward to seeing a game the year after next.

The vote at the Finance Committee was 5 to 1 for approval, with Bogdala being the sole dissenting voter.

On the Common Council floor, Alderperson Steve Bostrom said several times that he was a big supporter of the baseball project.? He stated that he felt that the Northwoods League was going to be a good operator, and he wanted to see the items spelled out in the lease.? He stated that he was thankful that Bogdala took the time to review and make changes to the lease.

The roll call vote to amend, as presented by Bogdala, however, failed by a vote of 4 to 11.

Bogdala then commenced taking each change individually.? He started with the alcohol sales.? Alderperson Anthony Kennedy called for a point of order, and the city attorney, Ed Antaramian, checked into it.? Kennedy?s point was that individual motions could not be made after the ?wholesale? motion was voted down.? Antaramian said it was up to the presiding officer?s discretion.? Alderperson Eric Haugaard was filling in for the mayor tonight, and he allowed it.

Bogdala said that ?these were common? sense changes that benefit the taxpayer.? The ball field is located in a neighborhood.? We have alcohol throughout the city.? They do have similar language in other municipalities,? he said.? Bostrom was supportive.? ?This is the only way to ensure that these items are covered, is to put them in the lease.? He asked for the Council?s support on this one item, the one having to do with the alcohol sales.? Bogdala?s amendment prohibited alcohol sales after the seventh inning, or after 9 pm, whichever came first.? After Alderperson Scott Gordon said that he had a problem with the 9 pm time frame due to possibly the holding of other events before a baseball game, Bogdala was willing to remove that stipulation from his amendment.

Stenman said that in Madison, they were allowed to sell alcohol through the end of the game.? They worked with the Alcohol License Review Committee in Madison, and he also said that it?s never been a part of the lease agreement.? A question was raised about Wisconsin Rapids? end time, and Mulligan said that he didn?t know off the top of his head.? He?d have to go back and review the other sixteen lease agreements.

Alderperson Scott Gordon wanted to know if there were serious issues with the team, does the Licensing & Permit Committee have the ability to call the owners and pull their permit, and the answer was yes.

The roll call vote on Bogdala?s amendment failed by a vote of 7 to 8.? Prozanski then called for the question, thereby ending the debate.? That vote was 10 to 5.? Those voting no were Alderpersons Eric Haugaard, Kevin Mathewson, Steve Bostrom, Jesse Downing, and David Bogdala.

The vote on the item, as presented by the city then was approved by a vote of 12 to 3.? Those voting against were Alderpersons Mathewson, Downing, and Bogdala.

Gunmen kidnap 4 Chinese construction workers in Bayelsa

Gunmen on Monday abducted four Chinese nationals working for Hyundai Fabrication Company. The incident took place on Okpoama Island, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

Confirming the report, Mr Fidelis Odunna (DSP), the Police Public Relations Officer in Bayelsa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the gunmen stormed the company?s site by boat and abducted the Chinese workers.

He, however, said that the police command had since deployed detectives to comb the creeks for possible clues, adding that ?strategic security measures are being put in place to forestall a reoccurrence??.

Community sources earlier told NAN that one of the four kidnapped men was the company?s Operations Manager, who was simply identified as Mr J.H. Kin.

A source also told NAN that the gunmen blindfolded their hostages and took them away in their speedboat.

The source said that the abduction was carried out in a ?commando-like-manner??, as many of the company staff who witnessed the incident were reportedly helplessly.

NAN also learnt that officials of the Joint Military Task force (JTF) and policemen have been deployed to the creeks to hunt down the kidnappers and secure the release of the expatriates.

However, the whereabouts of the kidnapped men has yet to be ascertained, while no group has claimed responsibility for the action.

Hyundai Fabrication Company fabricates metal materials used by the Brass Liquefied Natural Gas Company (BLNG).

NAN investigations also revealed that the local communities have been at loggerheads with the company over its failure to employ youths from the area. (NAN)

Sweden finds Soviet submarine wreck in Baltic Sea

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The wreck of a Soviet submarine lost during World War Two has been found in the Baltic Sea, 71 years after it sank, the Swedish Military said on Monday.

The Swedish Armed Forces said the submarine, believed to have been lost on patrol in late 1941, was found in the Swedish economic zone southeast of the Baltic island of Oland in an area which German forces had mined during the war.

"There is much to indicate that the submarine headed straight into the minefield while on the surface and was blown apart by a mine," the military said in a statement.

On its website the military posted a video and still images of the wreckage, which had broken into two large sections.

The wreck was first reported by civilian divers during the summer months in the middle of this year. Swedish submarine salvage ship HMS Belos in the following months confirmed the find and photographed it, the military said.

Swedish authorities had informed Russia of the find in order to give family members and the Russian navy the opportunity to conduct a memorial ceremony at the site, the military added.

Several Soviet submarines sunk during World War Two have been found in Swedish waters over the years, it added.

Some of the reasons I focus on nutrition in Plastic Surgery | Midwest ...

plastic-surgeryI am trying to go a new pathway in my blog ? a little bit at least. I?m going to start talking about cosmetic surgery a little bit more, although I have talked about it quite a bit in the past. As many of you know, I am opening up a new office in Glenview in 2013, and I expect to be doing quite a bit of cosmetic surgery/procedures, with my own flair and passion for nutrition and natural solutions, of course.

The reality is if you start off with the person who is eating right and has a healthy lifestyle, as opposed to someone who is eating a ton of processed food, sugar, etc. or is on regular starvation diets/fad diets, the chance for success with plastic surgery is much higher for many reasons.

(1) A person generally feels better about themselves because they are eating better. That is, fad diets make a person stressed and anxious, and often people are grumpy and depressed because of the semi-starvation aspect of many of these diets. This affects their overall outlook on life, and results in people looking for surgical solutions to problems that can be treated with a fork and knife (the other kind!). The fact is eating right is powerful. It not only makes you look better, it really does make you feel better. And it?s not just this flighty sense of euphoria that most people get when they starve themselves, but a deep sense of comfort, happiness, and general good mood. In these cases, the cosmetic surgery that I do in these cases is really only a touchup, in the purest sense of the word. Sometimes, it just involves talking about how to get the most out of your diet, supplements, and exercise regimens.

(2) A person heals better if they are eating better. The reality is when a person who is on a bunch of fad diets that is chronically calorie restricted comes to my office, they are not necessarily the healthiest state of metabolism. They are usually in a state of catabolism where, because of all of these fad diets/calorie restriction, they are cannibalizing their lean body mass to provide the energy to feed their basal metabolic rate. What is one of the processes that are affected? Wound healing. And an wound healing is, without a doubt, the ?name of the game? in plastic surgery. Although there are many things we cannot control in regards to the phenomena of scarring, there are many things that we can control, one of which is providing a proper nutritional state to optimize the healing process. This is achieved through eating real foods (not junk carbohydrates and processed foods), supplementing carefully, and basically engaging in a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of exercise and rest when needed.

It?s as simple as that.

I?m very committed to bringing the total approach to beauty through natural health to all of my patients. I really but believe it all begins on the inside, with nutrition, proper supplementation, and a healthy active lifestyle. These ultimately all lead to not only a sense of well-being but in many patients, create an abiding sense of happiness which they can share with others.

It is true the plastic surgery is both an art and a science, and I?m very privileged to have a passion for pursuing both of the aspects of this wonderful craft. I?ll be talking more and more about the specific procedures that I do, while giving my particular take on the nutritional aspects regarding this procedure, and what you can do to achieve real health and real beauty.

It all begins within.

Syrian FM blames West for nation's suffering

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's foreign minister blamed the suffering of his country's people on U.S. and European sanctions imposed on his country, telling a top U.N. official Saturday that the international body should condemn these measures and work toward lifting them.

Officials in Damascus say U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos during her one-day visit to Syria asked about the needs of Syrians after 21 months of conflict.

The comments by Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem and other officials however sought to deflect responsibility for the Syrian public's hardships on a wave of sanctions to punish President Bashar Assad's regime for its crackdown against protesters calling for democratic reforms, a crackdown that evolved into a civil war that has left more than 40,000 dead.

"The sanctions imposed by the United States and countries of the European Union on Syria are responsible for the suffering of the Syrian people," the state-run news agency SANA quoted al-Moallem as saying. The measures include a travel ban and freeze on the assets of Assad and other Syrian government leaders, along with an embargo on the oil and arms trades.

The battle to bring down Assad has already forced some 3 million Syrians from their homes, according to a new estimate, and cold, wet winter weather is making life increasingly unbearable for the displaced. Among those who left their homes are more than 500,000 who fled to neighboring countries. The U.N. does humanitarian work in both government- and rebel-controlled areas.

Amos met later in the day with Minister of National Reconciliation Ali Haidar who criticized the U.N., saying, "It is exploiting this matter politically not as a humanitarian case." He said international organizations know "the needs of the Syrian people and should show readiness to distribute aid."

In Baghdad, the president of the Syrian Red Crescent, Abdul-Rahman Attar, called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to play "a greater role" in efforts to reach areas hit by heavy fighting. Attar said the Syrian organization's volunteers are struggling to reach people trapped in clashes between the military and the rebels.

"I am afraid that the crisis would deepen with more fighting," Attar said Saturday after meeting with Iraqi counterparts.

Also Saturday, Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaida-linked force that has proved to be one of the most successful fighting groups in the war against Assad, claimed responsibility for explosions that targeted the Interior Ministry in Damascus three days ago.

The three bombs collapsed walls of the Interior Ministry building on Wednesday and killed at least five people.

The Obama administration designated Jabhat al-Nusra a terrorist organization Monday, a day before it recognized the newly formed opposition Syrian National Coalition as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people.

Meanwhile Jordan, politicians who defected from the Syrian government announced from exile in the capital Amman the formation of a new opposition group, headed by Assad's ex-prime minister.

Deputy Oil Minister Abu Hussam Ad-Din and former diplomat to Belarus Farouk Taha said in a Saturday news conference in Amman that the National Free Coalition of the Workers of Syrian Government Institutions was formed to ensure that Syrian government institutions remain intact if Assad's regime collapses.

The group will be headed by former prime minister Riyad Hijab, one of the highest ranking officials to defect from Assad's regime during the conflict, according to Hijab's spokesman Mohamed Otari.

It also said it supports the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian National Coalition.

Activists reported heavy clashes and bombing south of the capital mostly in the southern neighborhood of Hajar Aswad and the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights said Syrian rebels were fighting with "popular committees" in the Damascus-area Yarmouk, which are led by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command. The PFLP-GC is led by Ahmed Jibril who is a strong ally of Assad.

"It's nonstop fighting since Friday," said Bissan, a resident of Yarmouk, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition her full name not be used for fear of reprisals. She said the fighting has been concentrated around the PFLP-GC's headquarters in Yarmouk, known as the al-Khalsa building. The rebels tried to take it over, but the PFLP-GC gunmen have been fighting back, Bissan said, adding that several mortar rounds landed in the camp during fighting Friday and Saturday.

The Palestinians are divided over the crisis in Syria. When Syria's unrest began in March 2011, the half-million-strong community struggled to stay on the sidelines. But in recent months, many Palestinians started supporting the uprising, although some insisted the opposition to the regime should be peaceful. A few groups with longstanding ties to the regime are fighting on the government side.

The Observatory also said the rebels and troops are still fighting in an infantry base in the northern city of Aleppo adding that opposition fighters have taken parts of it.

Syrian rebels have captured several large bases in areas near the Turkish border including the sprawling Sheik Suleiman base that was captured by rebels this week.

Activists also reported violence in other areas in the country including the village of Beit Saham, near Damascus' international airport.
