Should the Federal Government Be Subsidizing Flood Insurance ...

From: Moneyland - 5:45am - October 30, 2012

As Hurricane Sandy continues to batter the Eastern seaboard of the United States, one thing is for certain: Insurance companies will be ponying up for billions of dollars in property damage caused by high winds.? Last summer?s Hurricane Irene cost insurance providers more than $4 billion in damage claims, with flood insurance payments totaling nearly $1.3 billion. But what many Americans may not know is that this $1.3 billion was a bill footed by the federal government, which underwrites the vast majority of flood insurance across the nation. Historically, insurance companies have been wary of offering flood insurance to homeowners because the risks associated with flood insurance are difficult to forecast, so any private insurance that had been offered was prohibitively expensive for average homeowners. But in the 1960s, frequent flooding of the Mississippi River was driving up t...

Superstorm Sandy grounded more than 18,000 flights across the Northeast and the globe, and it will take days before travel gets back to normal.

According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, more than 7,000 flights were canceled on Tuesday alone, with traffic resuming slowly on Wednesday. Delays rippled across the U.S., affecting travelers in cities from San Francisco to Atlanta. Some passengers attempting to fly out of Europe and Asia also were stuck.

Authorities closed the three big New York airports because of the storm. New York has the nation's busiest airspace, so cancellations there can dramatically affect travel in other cities.

It was possible that John F. Kennedy airport would re-open for flights on Wednesday, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It wasn't known when the LaGuardia and Newark, N.J. airports would reopen.

Flying began to resume at other airports. Delta restarted flying from Boston and Washington Dulles and Reagan on Tuesday. Airline spokesman Morgan Durrant said it would resume domestic flights from JFK on Wednesday. Service was slowly returning to Philadelphia International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.

Traffic from Europe and Asia to the East Coast was beginning to resume.

Air France is scheduled to fly again from Paris to New York and Washington on Wednesday, subject to the reopening of the airports there. It resumed flights to Boston the day before. However, ten of 13 scheduled flights between Spain and the U.S. east coast were canceled Wednesday.

Traffic from Tokyo's Narita International Airport to New York and to Washington, D.C., resumed as of Wednesday morning. From Tokyo's Haneda airport, the JAL/American Airlines flight to and from New York was cancelled.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, which canceled seven flights to Kennedy airport through Wednesday, said service would resume Thursday.

South Korean airlines Korean Air and Asiana Airlines said they will resume normal service to East Coast cities starting late Wednesday or Thursday.

Travelers stuck overseas made the best of the delays they faced.

Peter and Sheryl Knight were scheduled to fly home to Washington from Hong Kong on Wednesday, but their Cathay Pacific Airways flight via New York's Kennedy airport was canceled. The airline put them on a flight for Chicago on Thursday, where they would board another flight home.

The delay gave them an extra day to enjoy Hong Kong, Knight said.

"We're very anxious to get back and were very much hoping that the flight would be on time, but once we learned it was delayed and once we learned our delay would be only one day ? Hong Kong's not a bad place to be for another day," said Knight.

Hurricane Sandy converged with a cold-weather system and slammed into New Jersey on Monday evening with 80 mph winds. The monstrous hybrid of rain and high wind ? and even snow in some mountainous inland areas ? has killed more than three dozen people in the U.S.

Airlines anticipated the storm's impact and began canceling flights on Saturday. By Tuesday they had scrapped more than 18,000.

In years past, airlines would have operated many of those flights ? and left airplanes and crews stranded in the wrong cities when a blizzard or thunderstorm shut things down.

But airlines have gotten aggressive about canceling because it makes restarting flights easier.

"It's kind of like dominoes ? when one aircraft is out of place, it means the flight crew is out of place, and that has a ripple effect throughout the rest of the day," said Lance Sherry, who runs the Center for Air Transportation Systems Research at George Mason University.

The number of cancellations from Sandy was roughly on par with other major storms that airlines deal with. A major winter storm in early 2011 caused 14,000 cancellations over four days.

Airlines face a large task in getting things back to normal. Workers had to clear garbage and downed tree limbs from runways at JFK. Water was on the runway at LaGuardia, according to a letter from United CEO Jeff Smisek to workers. At one point, some airlines hoped to restart some New York flights by late Tuesday, but that idea went out the window right along with the travel plans of their passengers.

Flooded roads and closed subways will keep some workers from the airport. Reservations workers at other airports and at call centers are busy dealing with stranded passengers.

Some travelers hunkered down and waited, while others looked for a new way home.

Orbitz said car rates jumped 14 percent in New York from last week. Rates jumped even higher in Boston and Washington, including a 50 percent spike in Philadelphia.

Orbitz said hotel room rates rose 55 percent in Newark, where cancellations accelerated earlier than other New York-area airports. They rose 9 percent in one week in Washington, but fell 8 percent in Boston and New York City.

Some travelers figured they could do better the further away they got from the coast.

Wedding photographer Josh Saran was in Washington D.C. to shoot a Saturday wedding. His Southwest flight home to Seattle was canceled, so he rented a car and headed toward Columbus, Ohio. When snow closed the highway, he turned his rented Chevy Aveo toward Pittsburgh to catch a US Airways flight.

"I have a really loving and smart girlfriend in Seattle that sits in front of a computer and calls the airlines and sees where I can go," he said.

Airline reservations systems are so complex that one department might cancel a flight even while a reservations worker is trying to shift a traveler onto that same flight, said Joe Brancatelli, a travel expert who runs a newsletter for business travelers.

Travelers don't have any choice but to be patient, he said.

"Where are they gonna go? They hate United today, they go to Delta next week," he said. "Delta screws them, they go to American, and then it's a big circle."

AT&T and TMobile temporarily share networks in New York City and New Jersey, shoulder the posthurricane load

Communication has been all too spotty across much of New York City and New Jersey since Hurricane Sandy struck the region, and those who can get through on their cellphones have found themselves on particularly crowded networks. AT&T and T-Mobile are providing some much-needed, if temporary, relief: the two have struck a deal to share their GSM and 3G networks in the area with no roaming fees or plan changes while the networks come back, with the best-functioning network taking precedence in any given connection. A return to the normal state of affairs hasn't been fixed in stone and will likely depend on many, many factors, but it's a much appreciated gesture for residents who might not have a choice to relocate for a vital phone call.

Classism in higher education and Working class college students ...

So I just asked for two new LCSH to aid me in describing the zine Bursting Your Bubble : a Rant.

Classism in higher education

I'd love to see additional terminology for http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00006748 for "Classism": "Classism in higher education," and potentially other "ins," per the "Racism in higher education" and "...in the work place" pattern.

I base this request on a zine I just cataloged for Barnard College/Columbia University that is entirely about the author's experience of the discrimination, abuse and snobbery she faces as a working class student at a most selective college (Oberlin).

Thank you for your consideration.

Working class college students

I recommend adding a cross reference to the terminology for http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2005004549 from "Low-income college students": "Working class college students." You might even consider changing the terminology and making "Low-income" the cross reference. It seems to me that "working class" is a more popularly used term, particularly among the group the term is meant to describe.

I would apply this heading to a zine I just cataloged for Barnard College/Columbia University that is entirely about the author's experience of the discrimination, abuse and snobbery she faces as a working class student at a most selective college (Oberlin).

A search in your catalog on < ALL: working class college student? > yields 67 results, so it seems there are quite a few people using the terminology I'm suggesting.

Cashless Society: Glo calls for more telecoms involvement in ...

By Babajide Komolafe

Telecoms service provider, Globacom, has called on the Nigerian Government to allow telecommunications companies to participate in the regulation of the mobile money subsector which is the instrument of the new cashless policy of the country.

Speaking at a seminar in Lagos on ?Nigeria Transiting to A Cashless Society: Possibilities and Challenges?, Tunde Kuponiyi, Globacom?s Director, Telebanking Unit?said that the current regime of mobile money regulation, which is being bank-driven, is not friendly to telecoms?companies who provide the mobile payment platform.

Delivering a paper at the seminar on Monday, Kuponiyi said that though there was a lot that telecoms companies could contribute in a cashless economy, their current mandate was limiting.

Kuponiyi explained that since the mobile payments business is ninety percent dependent on the mobile industry, it was unfair that the mobile networks are prevented from advertising their various mobile payment products which are the foundation on which the bank products operate.

?From the customer?s mobile phone, to the mobile payments system and feedback to the mobile phone, the mobile payment transaction utilizes mostly mobile resources, makes use of mobile time and is supported largely by mobile engineers, but unfortunately the CBN has restricted telecom companies from advertising in the mobile payments space?, Kuponiyi said. He advocated that telecom companies must be allowed to speak about the capabilities of their networks, the quality of user experience and the choice of mobile payment services available on their networks.

He lamented that the passive role to which the telecoms companies have been confined has led to the slow growth of the mobile payment sub sector.? ?It is now roughly a year since the first mobile money went live and approaching a year since cashless economy came into operation. Meanwhile, none of the individual players can boast of having more than 10,000 active subscribers?, he stated. Kuponiyi concluded that while the regulation supports leadership by banks, he believed that the rules need to be adjusted to create more room for telecoms companies? involvement so they can do more in support of mobile payments.

?Telecoms companies have large and wide retail networks spanning the farthest reaches of the country that they can make available to scheme operators for mobile money services.

Comments are moderated. Please keep them clean and brief.

Nate McLouth Home Run or Foul Ball? Orioles, Yankees Game Includes Controversial Call (VIDEO)

Move over Jeffrey Maier. There is a new home run controversy in the revitalized rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.

With his Orioles trailing, 1-0, in the sixth inning of Game 5, Nate McLouth pulled a pitch from CC Sabathia down the right-field line. It was high. It was far. But was it foul?

According to the umpiring crew on hand, it was just foul. O's skipper Buck Showalter argued the call and -- unlike infield fly calls -- home runs are reviewable under current MLB rules. Watching the replays shown as part of the TBS broadcast, many fans and media on Twitter seemed sure that the ball had grazed the pole and changed direction, even if only slightly. If the ball came in to contact with the pole then it should have been ruled a home run. Nevertheless, the call was upheld after a brief review by the umpires at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia would strike out the mighty McLouth on the next pitch to escape the sixth. With Sabathia going the distance, the Yankees would go on to win 3-1 to advance to the ALCS.

WATCH: Additional TBS Replays

Given the difficultly in determining whether or not the ball glanced off the pole, Matt Snyder of CBSSports felt that upholding the call -- even if it had been called a home run initially -- was the only option for the umps during review. Similarly, Kevin Kaduk of Big League Stew felt it "was probably the right call as the visual evidence was far from indisputable."

TBS sent Craig Sager out into the stands in the second deck at Yankee Stadium for opinions from those with the best view. Standing beside a Yankees fan named Steve Ellis, who had caught the controversial drive, Sager relayed what he'd learned.

"I cannot detect any yellow paint on it," said Sager, who was holding the ball. "However, the usher at the top of 207 said the ball did barely nick the foul pole."

If a Yankees employee is willing to admit that the ball hit the foul pole then there must be a chance that the umps got this one wrong. Of course, the O's manager didn't seem much interested in controversy after the game.

"Someone said it nicked the pole. But that didn't beat us," Showalter said during his postgame media availability. "I appreciate them using the system in place to get it right because that's all the umpires did."

Will Showalter feel the same after seeing additional replays? Will Orioles fans be as gracious as the team's manager? Do you think the umpires got it right?

US stocks fall, headed for weekly decline

Stocks slipped on Friday, putting Wall Street's big indexes on track for their worst week since early June.

Bank and energy stocks led the way lower after investors had a mixed reaction to earnings reports from JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo.

In afternoon trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was off six points at 13,321, giving up an earlier gain of 75. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell four points to 1,429 and the Nasdaq composite lost two points to 3,047.

All three indexes are down more than 2 percent for the week, enough to make this their worst week since June. Investors haven't had much to get excited about, with mixed results this week from U.S. companies including Alcoa, Safeway and Yum Brands. Investors have seemed unsure how to evaluate the news, with stocks posting some of their biggest daily losses in late morning or early afternoon.

"It's been a relative downer week in the market this week, and people are going into the weekend not wanting to hang out there too much," said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist for PNC Wealth Management.

Looking beyond this week, stocks have had a strong run. The S&P 500 is up more than 11 percent since June 1. The run-up suggested that investors were anticipating a strong economic recovery. Now it's put-up or shut-up time for corporate profits.

"What people have to decide is, is America going into recession with the rest of the world, or are we going to start accelerating and lead the way out of recession for the rest of the world," said Randy Warren, chief investment officer for Warren Financial Service.

Financial stocks were the focus on Friday.

The nation's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, blew away Wall Street's expectations for quarterly profits. Wells Fargo just edged out profit forecasts but its revenue fell short.

Wells Fargo fell 98 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $34.20, and JPMorgan fell 44 cents to $41.66. Bank of America fell 21 cents to $9.13. US Bancorp lost 732 cents to $33.66.

Financial and utility stocks had the biggest declines among the 10 industries in the S&P 500. Technology stocks rose, led by Microsoft, Oracle, IBM and Cisco.

Trucking and logistics company J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. rose $4, or 7.3 percent, to $58.79 after its third-quarter profit rose almost 14 percent on strong growth in handling containers that move by ship, rail, or truck.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. dropped 39 cents, or 12 percent, to $2.81, after the chipmaker said its third-quarter revenue will fall about 10 percent from the second quarter because of weak demand for its products.

Workday Inc.'s initial public offering popped. The company provides remote storage for human resources and finance. The stock rose $21, or 75 percent, to $49 on its first day of trading.

European markets were mostly lower. The Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.6 percent, while Germany's DAX and France's CAC-40 each gave up 0.7 percent.

Trading was steady in other markets too. The euro edged up 0.3 percent to $1.296 and the benchmark oil price was 27 cents lower at $91.80 per barrel in New York trading.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note edged down to 1.66 percent from 1.67 percent late Thursday.

5 Methods to Remove Wrinkles

You will have to just look around to know how youth obsessed today?s world is. Everywhere there are ads for miracle creams that will either stop signs of aging or remove wrinkles or help you to grow back your hair, etc.

This and other such observations have been duly noted by the website ?A 2 Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness? to show how we are spending millions of dollars to regain our youth. In this endeavor, removing wrinkles seem to be the foremost method in keeping one?s youth. So here are some of the most common methods employed to remove wrinkles:

1. Sub-dermal injection: This method is one of the most popular ways to remove wrinkles. There are many types of sub-dermal injections that can be used according to ?A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon?. One of the processes, used by those who have wrinkles due to post-traumatic stress, scarring or aging; is injecting autologous fat implants. These fat implants are taken from other parts of the patient?s body which the surgeon manually remove and inject in places from where wrinkles are to be removed. Two types of collagen alternative, Hylaform and Restylane are also used in similar manner to remove wrinkles. Among the two, professionals prefer the latter as it is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance which is most hypoallergenic. Another primary non-surgical method of removing wrinkles is injecting Botox made of the same toxin that is responsible for botulism. This substance causes your facial muscles to ?paralyze? resulting in a smooth looking skin that stays like that for months.

2. Tropical Cream: There are varieties of tropical creams that will help you to remove wrinkles, according to ?A 2 Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness? website. The more effective creams, which also fight acne and skin damage along with tackling wrinkles, have tretinoin or Vitamin A acid. The user may see skin irritation and peeling but it is still advisable to use the cream till peeling stops. A natural substance found in fruit and milk, alpha hydroxyl acid or AHA, slowly remove wrinkles by going deep into the skin. According to the same website, your everyday moisturizer and antioxidant can also help you to remove wrinkles provided you use it in daily basis.

3. Chemical Peel: Three types of peels are available according to ?A 2 Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness? website that help to remove wrinkles. The first, superficial peel, mostly have hydroxyl acid (may also contain trichloroacetic acids) and lasts for about 15 minutes. It however does not penetrate the skin too deeply. The second one has mostly trichloroacetic acids and penetrates the skin. The medium peel lasts about an hour. As the name suggests, deep peel lasts for 2 hours and phenol is exclusively used. If you undergo this form of peeling to remove wrinkles, be prepared to be in the hospital for two days and then rest for at least two weeks.

4. Laser removal: There are two types of laser treatment available for those looking to remove wrinkles. Caron dioxide beams are used in the process of laser resurfacing and it can remove wrinkles one layer at a time. Professional plastic surgeons use it along with other treatment to stop aging like face lift. But the procedure has serious side-effects like discoloring, scars, burns and even infection. On the other hand, non-ablative laser resurfacing uses light beams to remove discoloration and spider veins and activate collagen remodeling.

5. Cosmetic surgery: Many kinds of surgery are used by surgeons to remove wrinkles, chief among them being brow-lifts and face-lifts. These kinds of surgeries, according to ?A 2 Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness? website have very little side-effects and are termed as minor surgeries. Basically both the processes are same; the skin is pulled tightly so that wrinkles in that area are removed instantaneously. The difference between the two is how much area of your face is undergoing this treatment to remove wrinkles. In a brow-lift, upper half of the face, from the nose, is subjected to this surgery while in face-lift, the entire face is done.

Budget 2013: Experts pick holes, emphasize close monitoring ...

*Allocation to Infrastructure grossly inadequate?LCCI

*NMA decries paltry allocation to health

By Babajide Komolafe, Sola Ogundipe, Chioma Obinna, Michael Eboh, Godwin Oritse, Rosemary Onuoha & Dotun Ibiwoye

LAGOS ? Economic experts and the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), yesterday, reacted to the Budget 2013 proposed by the Federal Government on Wednesday, commending some of the proposals while faulting others.

They, however, called for close monitoring of the implementation of the budget, saying this was what mattered most.

Specifically, experts commended the reduction in the share of the recurrent expenditure, increased focus on agriculture and women, and the incentives to some sectors of the economy. They, however, faulted the proposed oil output of 2.63 million barrel per day, low allocation to health sector, reliance on borrowing to finance the budget, and the lack of accountability in the implementation of the budget for 2011.

On its parts, NMA lamented exclusion of the health sector from the tax relief announced by the President.

Mr. Goodie Ibru,OON, President, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), said: ?Generally, these assumptions are realistic and sustainable. However, the oil production assumption is on the optimistic side, as crude oil theft and vandalisation of pipelines in the oil producing areas have not abated. The expenditure outlay in the budget is N4.92 trillion. At this stage, it is difficult to undertake a thorough analysis of budgetary appropriations as the full details are yet to be released.

?But from the expenditure proposals, it is evident that allocations to infrastructure development and some other critical sectors of the economy are grossly inadequate. The government needs to do a lot more in the areas of power, the roads and agriculture. It is important to also note that this allocation is a combination of both recurrent and capital, which implies that the capital content is even much lower.

2013 budget chart

?We note the 2.7 per cent reduction in recurrent expenditure from 71.43 per cent to 68.7 per cent; and the increase of 2.8 per cent in capital budget, from 28.5 per cent to 31.3 per cent. These adjustments are not profound enough to provide the needed infrastructural support to stimulate the economy.

?The country?s debt profile remains a major source of concern. We are concerned about the growing level of domestic debt and the high cost of debt servicing. Domestic borrowing is proposed to reduce from N747 billion in 2012 to N727 billion in 2013, a mere 2.3 per cent reduction. A staggering N591.76 billion is earmarked for debt servicing.

?However, the provision of N100 billion sinking fund for the repayment of maturing debt obligations is a welcome development. We commend these measures as they could boost domestic production, conserve foreign exchange and create jobs.

?However, the imposition of 100 per cent levy on rice which is a staple food may have some unintended consequences if there is no adequate supply side response on the domestic front. We have to be sure that domestic capacity to grow and process rice has been put in place, otherwise, we face the following risks: Drastic increase in the price of rice which would result in escalation of poverty; escalation of smuggling and corruption at the ports; pressure on government for waivers of duty; diversion of cargoes to neighbouring countries, thus denying the maritime sector of jobs and revenue.

?For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry is in full support of the self-reliance aspirations in food production. But for such a policy to be sustainable, there should be a deliberate policy and practical steps to build capacity to fill the demand-supply gap that would be created. Otherwise, the citizens will be further impoverished. The implications of the recent flood disaster on food security are also a factor to take into account.

Razia Khan, Regional Head of Research, Africa, for Standard Chartered Bank said the budget is an encouraging sign of the weight currently given to reforms in Nigeria. Specifically, she noted that though there was an increase in total expenditure by five per cent, the increase was relatively modest, and compares favourably with the magnitude of spending increase that we had seen in 2010.

In real terms, it signals the ongoing attempt to achieve fiscal consolidation. This is also reflected in the budget deficit, which falls to a projected 2.17 per cent of GDP, from an estimated 2.85 per cent in 2012, largely as already indicated.

She said the decline in the share of recurrent expenditure to 68.7 per cent of the budget ?is a further step in the right direction, and indicative of the authorities? desire to gradually boost the share of capital expenditure, providing a firmer platform for future growth.?

Khan, who is the Regional Head of Research, Africa, for Standard Chartered Bank, also commended the $75 per barrel oil price benchmark, but warned against any attempt to increase the benchmark.

She said: ?Of greater concern is the suggestion that there might be an attempt by the House to raise this to USD 80/bbl. In our view, given global risks, and Nigeria?s ongoing fiscal and export dependency on a single commodity, the priority for Nigeria has got to be increasing its rate of saving. Were oil prices to fall, Nigeria would currently be left very vulnerable, with no sound mechanism for being able to smooth spending, let alone provide a counter-cyclical boost to the economy.

?The Sovereign Wealth Fund, while encouraging, is not yet sizeable enough to create a sound buffer against external shocks. It cannot be assumed either that the debt markets currently comfortably open to Nigeria, would be unaffected by any fall in the oil price. There is, therefore, a need for much more fiscal conservatism, and the signals from the House are a considerable concern. Khan, however, expressed concern on the budgeted oil output of 2.63 million barrel per day. She said ?Also a concern is the slow creep up in the budgeted oil output, which now rises to 2.53mn bpd from 2.48mn bpd.

?This measure has risen consistently year after year recently, with no real visibility on whether Nigeria has seen the investment that allows it to comfortably commit to greater output levels. Yes, some official data appears to indicate that Nigeria is currently producing near an all-time highs. But there are such vast disparities in different estimates, and so many gaping holes in measures of Nigeria?s oil output, that the continued rise in Nigeria?s budgeted output assumptions, at a time when investment in the sector has been dwindling, does not inspire great confidence.?

Samuel Durojaye, President, Finance Houses Association of Nigeria (FHAN): ?It is not really what is proposed that matters but what is implemented. The budget has deficit which is to be financed by additional borrowing from the public. Already, there are concerns about government borrowing crowding out the private sector of loanable funds, even the Minister for Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed this concern, saying we should find a way to reduce government borrowing.

That is why the National Assembly is proposing that the oil price benchmark should be increased to $80 per barrel.

?What the Federal Government needs to do to reduce spending and borrowing is to reduce bureaucratic expenses. We should cut overhead expenses of political office holders by 20 per cent, by reducing the retinue of aides and advisers. The National Assembly too should reduce its overhead expenses but they don?t want to do that. We need to sit down as a nation and see how we can reduce expenses. There is so much money in the political space and we need to reduce it.

Former Minister of Finance, Chief Olu Falae, also commended the reduction in the share of the recurrent expenditure but called for accountability in the implementation of the capital expenditure. He said:?In a long while we can see a change where there is a reduction in the recurrent and an increase in the capital expenditure. The increase in the capital expenditure is quite significant. This is good. Although the majority of the budget is on recurrent expenditure, a reduction of it from the previous years will cut government?s expenses.

?When a substantial amount is devoted to capital expenditure which is an increase from the previous years, economic growth can be attained. I hope that the capital expenditure will be used well. The budget is good on paper and we hope that the capital expenditure will be disbursed in good terms.

?Capital projects will always be to the advantage of Nigerians, it will add value in the long run. I hope that the mix of the capital expenditure will be adequately channelled to the appropriate sector and will be accounted for because one of the problems we have in this country is accountability. We all hope that the stealing will be minimized, this is very important.?

Alex Karras, former NFL lineman, actor, dies at 77 | Sports ...

DETROIT (AP) ? Alex Karras was one of the NFL's most feared defensive tackles throughout the 1960s, a player who hounded quarterbacks and bulled past opposing linemen.

And yet, to many people he will always be the lovable dad from the 1980s sitcom "Webster" or the big cowboy who famously punched out a horse in "Blazing Saddles."

The rugged player, who anchored the Detroit Lions' defense and then made a successful transition to an acting career, with a stint along the way as a commentator on "Monday Night Football," died Wednesday. He was 77.

Karras had recently suffered kidney failure and been diagnosed with dementia. The Lions also said he had suffered from heart disease and, for the last two years, stomach cancer. He died at home in Los Angeles surrounded by family members, said Craig Mitnick, Karras' attorney.

"Perhaps no player in Lions history attained as much success and notoriety for what he did after his playing days as did Alex," Lions president Tom Lewand said.

His death also will be tied to the NFL's conflict with former players over concussions. Karras in April joined the more than 3,500 football veterans suing the league for not protecting them better from head injuries, immediately becoming one of the best-known names in the legal fight. Mitnick said the family had not yet decided whether to donate Karras' brain for study, as other families have done.

Born in Gary, Ind., Karras starred for four years at Iowa. Detroit drafted Karras with the 10th overall pick in 1958 and he was a four-time All-Pro defensive tackle over 12 seasons with the franchise.

He was the heart of the Lions' defensive line, terrorizing quarterbacks for years. The Lions handed the powerful 1962 Green Bay Packers their only defeat that season, a 26-14 upset on Thanksgiving during which they harassed quarterback Bart Starr constantly.

Packers guard Jerry Kramer wrote in his diary of the 1967 season about his trepidation over having to play Karras.

"I'm thinking about him every minute," Kramer wrote.

For all his prowess on the field, Karras may have gained more fame when he turned to acting in the movies and on television.

Playing a not-so-bright bruiser in Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles," he not only slugged a horse but also delivered the classic line: "Mongo only pawn in game of life."

Several years before that, Karras had already become a bit of a celebrity through George Plimpton's behind-the-scenes book about what it was like to be an NFL player in the Motor City, "Paper Lion: Confessions of a Second-string Quarterback."

That led to Karras playing himself alongside Alan Alda in the successful movie adaption ? Karras and Plimpton remained friends for life and one of Karras' sons is named after Plimpton ? and it opened doors for Karras to be an analyst alongside Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford on "Monday Night Football."

In the 1980s, he played a sheriff in the comedy "Porky's" and became a hit on the small screen as Emmanuel Lewis' adoptive father, George Papadapolis, in the sitcom "Webster."

He also had roles in "Against All Odds" and "Victor/Victoria." He portrayed the husband of famed female athlete "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias in the TV movie that starred Susan Clark, who later became his wife. The two formed their own production company and it was Clark who played the role of his wife on "Webster."

Recently, his wife said Karras' quality of life has deteriorated because of head injuries sustained during his playing career.

Susan Clark said her husband couldn't drive after loving to get behind the wheel and couldn't remember recipes for some of the favorite Italian and Greek dishes he used to cook.

"This physical beating that he took as a football player has impacted his life, and therefore it has impacted his family life," Clark told The Associated Press earlier this year. "He is interested in making the game of football safer and hoping that other families of retired players will have a healthier and happier retirement."

Clark has said he was formally diagnosed with dementia several years ago and has had symptoms for more than a dozen years. He joined hundreds of other former players suing the league.

"It's the same thing as back in the gladiator days when the gladiators fought to death," Mitnick, who represents Karras and hundreds of others in the suit, has said. "Fans care about these guys when they're playing and they are heroes. But as soon as you're not a hero and not playing the fan doesn't really care what happens to them."

The NFL has said it did not intentionally seek to mislead players and has taken action to better protect players and to advance the science of concussion management and treatment.

Karras played his entire NFL career with the Lions before retiring in 1970 at age 35. He was a first-team All-Pro in 1960, 1961 and 1965, and he made the Pro Bowl four times. He missed the 1963 season when he was suspended by NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle in a gambling probe. Karras was recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a defensive tackle on the All-Decade Team of the 1960s.

Karras later wrote an autobiography, "Even Big Guys Cry," and two other books, "Alex Karras' and "Tuesday Night Football." Lewand said Karras also loved to garden and cook.

"We know Alex first and foremost as one of the cornerstones to our 'Fearsome Foursome' defensive line of the 1960s and also as one of the greatest defensive linemen to ever play in the NFL," Lewand said. "Many others across the country came to know Alex as an accomplished actor and as an announcer during the early years of 'Monday Night Football.'"

Testing nonprofit waters with Chicago Ideas Week

CHICAGO (AP) ? There are TED talks, Davos and Renaissance Weekends, all for innovators and world leaders to share creative ideas and make lucrative connections. And now there's a big-shoulders version of the grand-meeting-of-elite-minds concept: Chicago Ideas Week.

The weeklong program of panel discussions, speakers and demonstrations, which opened Monday, was the brainchild of Groupon co-founder Brad Keywell, who regards Chicago Ideas Week as a startup, albeit one that will never be publicly traded on Wall Street.

The Chicago-based entrepreneur was briefly a billionaire after Groupon Inc.'s IPO last year. But with tech stocks falling after Facebook's recent disappointing initial public offering, Keywell is now back to millionaire status, and promoting and savoring a project that won't be judged by the market.

Keywell hatched Chicago Ideas Week as a nonprofit last year with his business partner Eric Lefkofsky as co-founder and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel as a co-chair. Keywell meant to fill a void in his adopted hometown.

"We're in the heart of the world of startups and innovation, but something has been missing," Keywell told The Associated Press in a phone interview. That something was "a platform for world-class ideas," similar to the annual TED conference in California or the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, but more accessible to the general public. Instead of invitation-only events and tickets costing thousands of dollars, everyone is welcome for a small fee for each event.

It's "Davos for the everyman," as Ideas Week executive director Jessica Malkin has called it.

"We created something in Chicago where you can participate for $15," Keywell said. "It's not exclusive. It's inclusive."

On Tuesday evening, few seats remained empty at Chicago's Oriental Theatre for what was billed as a "megatalk" with AOL co-founder Steve Case and others about "disruptive innovation." They discussed a "sharing economy," immigrant entrepreneurs, Internet security versus convenience and the transformative promise of mobile telephone technology.

"As a nation, I think, we need to make sure we remain in ... an attacker mentality, really challenging the status quo," Case said. "We need to make sure we understand what got us here, which was entrepreneurship, and we (must) double down as a nation to make sure we preserve our lead in what clearly is a much more competitive world."

Other panel topics during the week include design as a competitive advantage, rebooting the brain and change as the constant.

Attendance is up so far in the event's second year, with other big-name speakers including retired Gen. Colin Powell, author Deepak Chopra, journalist Tom Brokaw, designer Diane von Furstenberg, model Elle Macpherson and actor Edward Norton. So far, 19,000 tickets have been sold, with 1,500 to 2,000 tickets selling a day, organizers said Tuesday.

"On Day One, I set it up as a nonprofit. I made a pledge to never make a penny off it," Keywell said. "No one can question the motives. The motives are to have something that provides intellectual stimulation and provocation."

This year, there are 30 talks, 100 "labs" or demonstrations, 235 speakers and the capacity for 28,000 attendees. Receptions after events are meant for people to network with speakers and with one another, Keywell said. The event has branched out into Twitter by asking for suggestions on how Chicago could get illegal guns off the streets. Tweeted answers are collected under the tag (hash) WhatIfChicago.

"The people attracted to Chicago Ideas Week are a wide expanse of ages," Keywell said. "We attract people who are doing or have a strong interest in doing. They're people who want to start something, join something or create something."

Keywell said the project could become like the 92nd Street Y in New York, a nonprofit that hosts cultural events in person and through digital media.

Posing a question on Twitter might indicate a new direction for Chicago Ideas Week. "We are actively in the process of determining what Chicago Ideas 365 looks like." That's what interests Keywell most now, he said: "What's it going to look like in the future?"

Why Foods Go Together Like 'Rama Lama Lama, Ke Ding A De Dinga Dong'

James Puccio/iStockPhoto

Taking a bite out of a salty pretzel can actually enhance the bitterness of your beer. That's one reason pretzels and beer work as a pair.

OK, Grease lyrics aside, when it comes to gastronomy, certain foods just belong together: red wine and red meat, sushi and ginger, tea and biscuits, beer and pretzels. But, ever wonder why your favorite cabernet goes so well with a nice filet mignon? What makes two flavors jibe?

"Lots of things come together to make flavor, whether it's hot, cold, lubricating, how it smells, what we taste. Flavor is an incredibly multisensory sensation," says Paul Breslin, an experimental psychologist at Rutgers University in New Brunswick and the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia. Color and sound even impact how we perceive food. But, in a recent experiment, Breslin zeroed in on how food feels in our mouths.

Breslin and his colleagues published a study this week in Current Biology that delves into why fatty foods and astringent drinks pair well. Even though the drinks are only weakly astringent, such beverages (wine, tea, beer, etc.) build in astringency with every sip, creating a strong feeling of dryness in your mouth. Conversely, fatty foods lubricate your mouth and make it feel slimy.

?

"Our mouth really wants to be in a position of balance," says Breslin. And the more you sip and chew, the better your mouth feels.

Texture and feeling are clearly important to food enjoyment. "Dry things, especially something like shortbread, go with beverages because you need a lot of saliva to swallow dry things," says Marcia Pelchat, a psychologist at Monell who was not associated with Breslin's study. It's why milk and cookies or tea and biscuits are tried-and-true combinations. Asian cultures frequently pair tea and rice for the same reason (but hold the milk if you want the full effect of tea's health benefits).

Mixing different textures can also appeal to the mouth. That's one reason why some people can't stand soggy cereal, she says.

That's not to say taste isn't vital as well. Take beer and pretzels, for example. Salt typically reduces bitter tastes, but in the case of beer, it actually enhances the bitterness ? something that might appeal to beer drinkers who like bitter flavors, says Pelchat.

Pairing two sweet things together ? like a sweet desert wine and a slice of German chocolate cake ? also comes down to taste. Because once you've taken a bite of the super sweet cake, the wine suddenly doesn't taste quite as sweet. (In addition, its astringency contrasts nicely.) This is called taste adaptation. "Every bite impacts how you perceive the next bite," explains Pelchat.

Some scientists have even gone as far as hypothesizing that foods with compatible flavors share chemical components. As we reported last December, University of Cambridge researchers compiled a "global flavor map" and found that Western cuisine often pairs like with like, chemically speaking. Think milk and eggs, vanilla and cocoa. Meanwhile, Asian cultures do the opposite.

So, how much of this is science and how much is culture? Breslin's finding about astringents and fats seems to hold true across hemispheres. "When you eat sushi or sashimi, that ginger refreshes your mouth. The same goes for a pickle and a corned beef sandwich. The French use sorbet and wine as a palate cleanser, while in some parts of Africa and Asia they use tea," says Breslin. "Different gastronomies pair them in different ways."

We'll drink to that.

How a Smile Can Affect Self-Esteem: Building Healthy Relationships with a Positive Attitude

People have deep subconscious needs, and the deepest need of all, the core emotional need of the human being, is for self-esteem. It is to maintain healthy relationships of mutual respect. The deepest need is to feel?important.

An important way of satisfying a deep subconscious need for self-esteem and personal value is acceptance.

Healthy Relationships and Self-Esteem

Sociologists say that lack of acceptance, or rejection from individuals or groups, is the main cause for many problems with disaffected groups in our society. Much of the antisocial behaviors of these groups is aimed at somehow gaining the acceptance of people who they feel do not accept them currently and to gain healthy relationships.

In healthy relationships, this is what everyone is seeking. Everyone wants to be liked and accepted just the way they are.

If all you did was to continually express unconditional acceptance to each person you meet, both at home and at your workplace, you would soon be one of the most popular in your world.? And how do you express unconditional acceptance? Simple. It?s to wear a smile.

Wear a Smile

It takes twelve muscles to smile and 113 muscles to frown. When you smile at another person, a warm, genuine smile, you tell that other person that he or she is attractive, pleasant, likeable, safe and secure in your estimation. A single smile is so powerful that it can often transform a person with?low self-esteem, jolting them from negativity to a person with a positive attitude.

Smiles are so powerful that many long-term marriages and healthy relationships have begun with a single smile shared across a room. You?ve heard people say that, ?When our eyes met, we both knew that we were meant for each other.?

Each morning, when you come to work, ?do the rounds.? Go to each person on your team and smile at them.? Ask them how they are. Take a few moments to listen patiently and smile while they tell you what they are doing and how they are feeling. As you go from person to person, like a lamp lighter going from lamp to lamp, they will light up and smile themselves, feeling happy about being at work. When you go around and smile at people, it is very much like stepping on the accelerator of their potential and igniting?positive attitude?wherever you go. They start to perform at a higher level because their self-esteem has risen.

The Big Payoff

There is a big payoff for smiling at people. When you smile at another person, the physical action releases endorphins in your brain. Endorphins are called nature?s ?happy drug.? They make you feel happy and raise your self-esteem. When you smile, you feel and act in a more personable way to everyone around you and exude a feeling of positive attitude. The most popular and influential people in most situations are people who genuinely smile at others when they meet them and greet them.

Every time you smile, you not only make other people feel better about themselves, but you raise your self-esteem, increase your level of positive attitude and feel better about yourself as well. You will start to?build healthy relationships?all around you. All it takes is the deliberate decision by you to smile at the people around you, and to express to them that you are genuinely happy to see them. The opposite of smiling is being negative or passive. It is walking around the office with a glum or a negative look on your face.? Since everyone takes everything personally, if you are negative for any reason, each of your staff members wonders if it is something that they have done personally that has made you happy. They become preoccupied with your mood. They slow down their work and their creativity comes to a halt. If you are negative for any period of time, they start to talk about it and worry about their jobs. Even if you are negative because you have an abscessed tooth that is causing you pain and discomfort, because other people do not know this, they will assume that they have done something wrong that has displeased you.

Maintain a Positive Attitude

From this day onward, decide that you are going to smile at each person in your department each morning when you go in. Walk around and greet them and ask them how they are doing.? Treat them as if they were working for free and their coming to work was purely voluntary. Treat them as if you owe them money and you are behind on the payments. Treat them as if their work were essential to your success in doing your work, which it is.

get healthy living updates

Women tend to take care of everyone else in their lives, at the expense of?their own health. Oftentimes we don?t maintain doctor visits for ourselves; we forget to exercise and to?eat nutritiously. We allow ourselves to become drained.

?Routine tests are our best defense for early diagnosis of disease and in turn, higher successful treatment rates if something is detected. Women need to make their health a priority. Testing is an important piece of the health care puzzle ? especially since diagnostic test results influence as much as 70 percent of healthcare decision-making,? Dr. Agim Beshiri, M.D., Medical Director at?Abbott. (abbott.com)

But how do you know what tests you really need, and which you can skip? Dr. Angela DeRosa, president and chief managing officer of DeRosa Medical, P.C. (derosamedical.com) says, ?Preventative health screenings are crucial but often confusing for my female patients.?

Every woman is different. So discuss with your doctor what tests, in addition to the standard ones, are appropriate tests are for you to undergo, based on family history, lifestyle and other factors. However, both doctors recommend that every woman have the following tests.
